GRAPHIC=Earthquake So far, only reports of minor

injuries after an earthquake jolted
Hawaiians out of bed yesterday morning.

Today residents across the state are
still dealing with power outages.

Those living near the epicenter are
just beginning a big clean- up, and it
may take airline travelers a little
longer to get home.

Susan Roberts reports.

(END SOT) (KITV video)

The first pictures from Hawaii s Big
Island show the power of a
six-point-six magnitude earthquake. The
tremor and its aftershocks collapsed
the concrete furnace of this historic
home.

(MAP)

The epicenter was 10 miles from
Kailua-Kona on the west coast of Hawaii
Island.. it wasn t large enough to
trigger a tsunami.. but residents and
tourists felt the quake across the
island chain.

MOS 19:30:17 everything was just
shaking, drawers were opening and
shutting, the doors were slamming
closed, all I could feel was my feet
lifting off the ground a little bit

(KITV video)

Near the epicenter authorities
evacuated hundreds of hospital patients
and hotel guests.. while they assessed

structural damage. Landslides and
falling rocks blocked roads and
highways.

The quake made phone communication
difficult.. but Joanne Iwane got
through to her husband on the Big
Island.

(Joanne Iwane, Hawaii Island Resident)

SOT 23:08:15 he said the patio windows

at our house are all cracked and down
on the ground and we also have a stone
foundation and that has shifted a bit

(KGMB video)

Power took a hit statewide.. because
built in seismic monitors automatically
shut-off all electrical systems.

(Gov. Linda Lingle (R-HI))

LINGLE 23:02:17 to repower up takes
some time and it is not like flipping
on a light switch it takes much more
time

Stores still in the dark.. opened their
doors to a couple customers at a time.

No power also caused problems at
airport security checkpoints. Flight
delays and cancellations have meant
long lines for travelers.

CLOSE: Hawaii s governor has declared a
state of emergency.. more than 50
federal officials are headed to the Big
Island to asses the damage. Susan
Roberts, News 7.

The first pictures from Hawaii s Big
Island show the power of a
six-point-six magnitude earthquake. The
tremor and its aftershocks collapsed
the concrete furnace of this historic
home.

(MAP)

The epicenter was 10 miles from
Kailua-Kona on the west coast of Hawaii
Island.. it wasn t large enough to
trigger a tsunami.. but residents and
tourists felt the quake across the
island chain.

MOS 19:30:17 everything was just
shaking, drawers were opening and
shutting, the doors were slamming
closed, all I could feel was my feet
lifting off the ground a little bit

(KITV video)

Near the epicenter authorities
evacuated hundreds of hospital patients
and hotel guests.. while they assessed
structural damage. Landslides and
falling rocks blocked roads and
highways.

The quake made phone communication
difficult.. but Joanne Iwane got
through to her husband on the Big
Island.

(Joanne Iwane, Hawaii Island Resident)

SOT 23:08:15 he said the patio windows

at our house are all cracked and down
on the ground and we also have a stone
foundation and that has shifted a bit

(KGMB video)

Power took a hit statewide.. because
built in seismic monitors automatically
shut-off all electrical systems.

(Gov. Linda Lingle (R-HI))

LINGLE 23:02:17 to repower up takes
some time and it is not like flipping
on a light switch it takes much more
time

Stores still in the dark.. opened their
doors to a couple customers at a time.

No power also caused problems at
airport security checkpoints. Flight
delays and cancellations have meant
long lines for travelers.

CLOSE: Hawaii s governor has declared a
state of emergency.. more than 50
federal officials are headed to the Big
Island to asses the damage. Susan

The first pictures from Hawaii s Big

six-point-six magnitude earthquake. The
tremor and its aftershocks collapsed
the concrete furnace of this historic
home.

(MAP)

The epicenter was 10 miles from
Kailua-Kona on the west coast of Hawaii
Island.. it wasn t large enough to
trigger a tsunami.. but residents and
tourists felt the quake across the
island chain.

MOS 19:30:17 everything was just
shaking, drawers were opening and
shutting, the doors were slamming
closed, all I could feel was my feet
lifting off the ground a little bit

(KITV video)

Near the epicenter authorities
evacuated hundreds of hospital patients
and hotel guests.. while they assessed

structural damage. Landslides and
falling rocks blocked roads and
highways.

The quake made phone communication
difficult.. but Joanne Iwane got
through to her husband on the Big

(Joanne Iwane, Hawaii Island Resident)

SOT 23:08:15 he said the patio windows

at our house are all cracked and down
on the ground and we also have a stone
foundation and that has shifted a bit

Power took a hit statewide.. because
built in seismic monitors automatically
shut-off all electrical systems.

(Gov. Linda Lingle (R-HI))

LINGLE 23:02:17 to repower up takes
some time and it is not like flipping
on a light switch it takes much more
time

Stores still in the dark.. opened their

airport security checkpoints. Flight
delays and cancellations have meant
long lines for travelers.
