search for a suspect.


It began yesterday after what
appeared to be a lengthy standoff.

on Towes Ferry road in Newbern around
six o'clock yesterday evening, but
police apparently did not find him
inside.

Police say Metz is wanted on an

has been arrested for sexual battery
and assault.

Police say Jeffrey William Hodges
the third was arrested for assaulting
two inmates at the Roanoke County,
Salem Jail.

According to police, Hodges was
working part time as a G-E-D instructor
at the jail when the incidents
happened.

Hodges has taught kindergarten at
South Salem Elementary for the past 11
years.

Salem school officials say
they've never received any complaints
about him.

Nevertheless, the school did send
a letter home all parents explaining
the situation.

single-vehicle accident in Wythe County
last night.

At around 9 o-clock, State Police
say a pick-up truck carrying a
camper-trailer wrecked and overturned
when the camper started to fishtale.

No other vehicles were involved.

The four people in the vehicle
were taken to the hosipital.

One passenger, 27-year-old James
Landon Simmerman of Wytheville later
died at Roanoke Memorial. The other
passengers' injuries are not believed
to be life-threatening.

None of the passengers were
wearing seatbelts.

Simpkins plead no contest yesterday
morning to attempted capital murder.

Police say Jeffrey William Hodges
the third was arrested for assaulting
two inmates at the Roanoke County,
Salem Jail.

According to police, Hodges was
working part time as a G-E-D instructor
at the jail when the incidents

happened.

Hodges has taught kindergarten at
South Salem Elementary for the past 11
years.

Salem school officials say
they've never received any complaints
about him.

Nevertheless, the school did send
a letter home all parents explaining
the situation.

racing takes over the Roanoke Civic
Center.

classes of riders competing.

Truck-load after truck-load of
dirt will be hauled in to create a
challenging track featuring jumps and
tight turns.

a showcase for the talent of local and
regional riders.
