THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY SAYS THAT
IF EVERY WOMAN LIVED TO BE 85, 1 OUT OF
8 OF THEM WOULD END UP WITH BREAST
CANCER.

AND THERE ARE MANY RISK FACTORS.

SOME YOU CAN CONTROL-- OTHERS YOU CAN'T
DO ANYTHING ABOUT--- LIKE YOUR GENES.

(SOT -Dr. Clifford Hudis/Memorial Sloan

"one of the most well identified risk
factors for breast cancer is
inheritance."

MANY WOMEN HAVE HEARD OF BRCA 1 AND
BRCA 2 - THE SO-CALLED "BREAST CANCER
GENES."

IF THEY HAVE CERTAIN MUTATIONS -- THEY
INCREASE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER.

AND YOU CAN'T CONTROL FATHER TIME.

AS WOMEN AGE-- THEIR RISK OF BREAST
CANCER INCREASES.

(STANDUP: Dr. David Marks/CBS NEWS/New

BUT-- THERE MAY BE SOME THINGS YOU CAN
DO TO IMPROVE YOUR ODDS.

FIRST-- STOP SMOKING!

IT'S THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR
HEALTH -- INCLUDING YOUR BREAST CANCER
RISK. :10 (:50)

"probably diet"

THAT MAY BE TRUE.

(SOT-Dr. Clifford Hudis/Memorial Sloan

"there's no question that obesity is
linked to higher rates of a variety of
cancers .. including breast cancer."

EATING A LOW-FAT, WELL BALANCED DIET
MAY HELP.

OTHER CONTROLLABLE RISKS MAY SURPRISE
YOU:

(gfx)

NOT HAVING CHILDREN ---

OR HAVING YOUR FIRST BABY AFTER AGE
30-- BOOSTS YOUR RISK.

THERE'S ALSO CONTROVERSY ABOUT WHETHER
BIRTH CONTROL PILLS POSE A RISK.....
THE JURY'S STILL OUT ON THAT.

BUT EARLY AND FREQUENT SCREENINGS
SHOULD ALWAYS BE YOUR FIRST DEFENSE.

JUST ASK SUSAN DAVIDSON.

But this one was planned.

This morning, demolition crews
imploded a well- known landmark, the
old Higgins Power Plant .

The building had become obsolete, and
was an environmental concern because it
contained asbestos and other dangerous
chemicals.

It took 75- pounds of explosives to
bring down the plant.

Its owner Progress Energy plans to
recycle thousands of tons of metal from
the plant.
