gather evidence and information today
at the site of a fatal plane crash.

Ground crews located the wreckage in
Halifax County yesterday after
searching for more than 36 hours.

The small plane went down in deep woods
in rugged terrain, which is one reason
it took so long to find.

The pilot, who was traveling from
Ridgeway to Greensboro, did not
survive. State Police have not yet
released his name.

from Roanoke County to build a Wal-Mart
"Supercenter" in the Clearbrook area
just south of Roanoke.

County Supervisors gave their
approval after midnight at the end of a
marathon public hearing.

VO NAT The shopping center would be located
just off of Route 220 behind a group
of luxury car dealerships.

It would go up just across the street
from Clearbrook Elementary School, and
for that reason, some people have
concerns over safety and increased
traffic in the area.

Supporters argue a new Wal-Mart
supercenter is exactly what that area
needs.

The developer now hopes to begin
construction next spring and says it
will then take a year for the Wal-Mart

to open.

Amendment" past two years and with the election

just two weeks away, the debate over
the Marriage Amendment is getting
louder.

Yesterday, Governor Tim Kaine and
his father-in-law, former Governor
Linwood Holton joined their wives today
in opposition of the proposed marriage
amendment.

They believe the amendment is too
vague and will have unintended
consequences for all unmarried
Virginians.

However, it's the legal opinion
of Attorney General Bob McDonnell that
the language will not affect the civic
rights of unmarried Virginians to enter
into contract or seek domestic violence
protection.

He says the language only further
protects traditional marriage.

Virginians will have their say
when they cast their votes on November
7th.

for a Carroll County farm....that's
because it's the state's top pumpkin
producer.

Carroll County are dedicated to growing
the orange fruit, and each acre
produces about a thousand pumpkins.

Kevin Semones (Se-mone-us),
manager of Southwest Virginia Farmers'
Market says the county's weather is
perfect for growing these Halloween
favorites.

He says about six years ago
Carroll County farmers, and agriculture
officials met with regional buyers to
find out what crop they should focus
on.

The buyers asked for pumpkins.

to transition many people who are
mentally challenged out of mental
health facilities.

Training Center is downsizing.

Over the next few years the goal
is to help at least 2- hundred of its
residents find placement in the
community.

Officials say they're not pushing
people out but giving them and their
families the choice.

Officials say while there will
always be a need for residential
services, in the future they will most
likely serve the most severely
challenged.

The center is in the planning
process of building a new smaller
facility.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident An accident in Pulaski County

yesterday left one man dead.

It happened on Route 100, about a
quarter of a mile south of Route 726.

Police say that a 2002 Ford
Excursion ran over an embankment.

No other vehicles were involved.


One passenger, 85-year-old David
Burkes Overstreet was taken to the
hospital and later died.

delays, a decision has been made on a
controversial power sub station and
line near Smith Mountain Lake.

VO-NAT Franklin County supervisors voted

in favor of the Westlake substation and
24 miles of powerline by a vote of
seven to zero.

The substation will connect
Westlake, Penhook, and Blaine and serve
the eastern portion of Franklin County.


Appalachian Power says it needs
the new lines and equipment to meet the
fast growing demand for electricity at
Smith Mountain Lake.

The substation will be located at
the corner of Brookmill and Scruggs
Road.

hoping Governor Tim Kaine will help
them take Norfolk Southern's plan for a
rail center "off track."

million dollar intermodal freight yard
in the Elliston- LaFayette area.

The board of supervisors passed a
resolution last night calling on the
governor and the General Assembly NOT
to provide state funding for the
project.

Norfolk Southern officials have
said in the past, they would NOT pursue
the site without money from the state.

Roanoke's most recognizable structures
is almost complete...

St. Andrew's Catholic Church is
wrapping up a more than 200- thousand
dollar preservation project.

One of the largest parts of this
project is the windows.

The stained- glass windows were
brought over from Germany when the
church was built in 19- 02.

Over the years weather has
deteriorated the wood around the
windows, and lead pieces holding the
glass together- and some were beginning
to bend.

The project is expected to wrap
at the end of this week.
