GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to an absolutely nasty night of
Friday Football Extra.

Please if you are not already get
yourself dried off and gather around
the TV for some of the wetest, messiest
highlights we've seen in awhile.

Now it rained back on Labor Day
weekend and we've had to deal with some
not so great weather several night this
year, but this by far was the worst.

Still, a number of folks decided
to tough it out and play and there were
two trends - teams either scored a lot
or very little - there was no in
between tonight.
GRAPHIC=SALEM/CAVE

Among those getting dirty tonight
- Salem and Cave Spring.

Friday Football Extra's number
one team found itself playing at Bogle
Field for the second straight Friday.
Last week the Spartans took over Hidden
Valley - tonight they tried to put away
Cave Spring and tally the school's 30th
straight win.

*CG ffeloc Roanoke Co.
Salem vs. Cave Spring Bogle Field would have been :00 better suited for a little mud
wrestling match tonight, as puddles of
water covered the field and sideline
making game conditions a mess for
players, coaches and cheerleaders
alike.

Cave Spring's first offensive
play would prove just that as Daniel
Downing mishandles the snap, but
pounces on it with no harm done.

The rain and Salem's defense
would completely shutdown Cave Spring's
offense. Take a look at Patrick
Pollifrone taking the quarterback down
into the turf with the sack.

Salem had its running game
rolling scoring early and often. This
is Brandon Grigsby taking the handoff
from the 26 all the way to the endzone
to give the Spartans a 6-to-nothing
lead early.

After a second Salem TD - Grisby
got his team on the scoreboard again.
This time he will makehis way throught
the torn up turf from 31 yards out to
make it a 21-to-nothing Salem lead

still in the first quarter.

On Salem's next possession is
would be Harrison Hudson's turn to
slosh through thet wets stuff andplay
the touchdown game. This time it's a
64 yard scamper to put the Spartans on
top 28-to-nothing. Salem had over 300
yards rushing in the first half alone.

Mark Hanabury would score Salem
sixth rushing touchdown of the half
with this 10 yard QB keeper.
*CG ffefinal Salem Salem just keep doing was it does 49 - winning its 30th straight game - Cave Spring 49-to-nothing the final.

GRAPHIC=HOLD CAVE/SALEM The folks in Roanoke County - or

at least some of the folks - understand
why Bogle Field is in such bad need of
Field Turf.

Besides the fact you can't forget
to water it or cut it too low, it is
artificial, so you can always play on
it.
GRAPHIC=BROOKVILLE/AMHERST

That's why when most people were

trying to figure out what to do last
night as far as playing or postponing -
it was a no-brainer for the folks in
Amherst where the field turf surface
was in perfect condition for the Lancer
and the visiting Brookville Bees.

*CG ffeloc Amherst Co.
Brookville vs. Amherst Co. The Lancers rolled into this one
knowing that no one's uniform was going
to get dirty tonight.

The score did get ugly in the
hurry, however.

In the first Amherst's Peter Rose
passes to Derrick McCoy, who makes the
jumping catch, then breaks a couple of
tackles and motors the other way for
the 50 yard touchdown. It's
8-to-nothing Amherst and we're just
getting started.

Now in the second, Brookville's
Rudy Staton fakes the handoff and
passes to Hugh Oulds, but it is picked
off by Jonathan Rose - who cuts back
across the field, turns on the after
burners and rolls in for the 55 yard
score to make it 16-to-nothing Lancers.

Amherst again - and again it's
Peter Rose handing off this time to
Alonzo Poe,who will zig,zag his way
through the defense. He will just flat
out outrun everyone on the defensive
side en route to a 75 yard score to
make it 22-to-nothing Lancers.

Brookville's Staton would try to
get off the mat and he gives it to
Stacy Houston, who scrambles through
the defense and he too will find
daylight and paydirt scoring from 60
yards out to cut the lead to 22-to-6.

Peter Rose would answer that with
a handoff to Jonathan - who runs his
way into the clear and out to the
sideline. He's taking it 50 yards for
the another Amherst touchdown and now
the score is 30-to-6 and the Lancers
are just scoring with unbelievable
ease.

Brookville's Staton would try to
hit Corby Weiss, but the ball bounces
off his shoulder pad *CG ffefinal Brookville and right to Jonathan Rose for his 6 second pick. He's will cut back Amherst Co. through the defense and take it 50 67 yards for another score.

Amherst rolls to the 67-to-6 win

over Brookville.

Hidden Valley vs. Blacksburg The Blacksburg sideline looked :00 more like a pond as the rain just never
let up for very long this afternoon to
allow for much drainage.

The Titans were in control in teh

fourth quarter looking to simply put
this one away. Brian Asquith will find
T.C. Bane on the pass play and the two
will pick up good yardage to the
Blacksburg 38 yard line.

The Bruins would hold on that
drive and Trey Gresh got the ball back
and he will complete an 11 yard pass to
Greg Keys to pick up a first down.

But Hidden Valley's defense would
really play tough tonight as Alex Wray
picks off the Blacksburg pass and the
A-Train is rumbling back to the 38 yard
line with the big pick.

Late in the fourth, Cory Sloane
keeps the clock running as he picks 12
yards on the carry and a another first

So, the Colonels and Cavs teeed

ENG#=2 VO-NAT

*CG ffeloc Daleville
William Fleming vs. Lord Botetourt As was the case in most stadiums
tonight - the crowd was a little sparce
and the gate a little slim.

Andrew Mitchell - who went for
337 yards last week - was anxious to

try his luck on a slower track.

But he would find the sledding
and the handle tough tonight as he
fields the opening kickoff, fumbles it,
and Fleming recovers deep in the
Botetourt's territory on the 15 yard
line.

But the Cavs' defense would stand
tall in the shadow of its own goal line
- holding Fleming to a four and out and
stopping a prime scoring chance.

Neither team was able to get a
grip in the first half. Jamarr
Rosbrough busts a big run as he gets
through the line, hits the left side,
but for some reason the ball will just
squirt out of its own. He dives for it
in the muck and mud. The ball would go
out of bounds. But again Fleming could
not score.

LB would have some of the same
issues. Matt Deane and his center
would have all kinds of problems with
the exchange, because the ball was
sticking to the ground due to the
suction with the mud. Five times they
fumbled in the first half, but
recovered all of them.
*CG ffefinal William Fleming Finally, Fleming would prevail
3 and win the Blue Ridge mud bowl 3 to 0 Lord Botetourt in overtime.

Congratulations to Wayne
Tarkington from Galax.

You are now in the running to win
the all-expenses paid trip for two to
the ACC Championship Game in
Jacksonville in December.

Plus, you get an ACC hat or
jacket of your favorite team just for
beating everyone to the phone tonight.

It's all courtesy of our good
friends at Dr. Pepper.
