were without power last night, as high
winds caused trees to fall, knocking
out electricity.

A Dominion Virginia Power
spokesperson says crews worked much of
Saturday dealing with scattered
outages.

In our region, it was primarily
homes around Covington, Alta Vista and
South Boston.

Appalachain Power is not
reporting any major outages.

GRAPHIC=Fire, House Two separate fires this week in

Roanoke were both caused by electrical
problems.

The first fire happened in
an apartment on Walnut Avenue Thursday
morning.

Investigators say a problem
with the electrical wiring started the
fire and caused about 20-thousand
dollars in damage.

About an hour and a half later, a

house on Highland Avenue in Southeast
caught fire.

This fire was caused by an
electrical cord on a heater.

Altogether, nine people were
forced from their homes.

and cost efficient, they're a major

When using space heaters, they should
come equipped with certain safety
devices, such as overheat protection
which turns unit off if the temperature
gets too high and a safety tip-over

switch which shuts the unit off if the
heater is knocked over. They should not
be plugged in using an extension cord.

using heaters is that they leave them
unattended and that can easily trigger
a fire. Also, when using keresone
heaters, you have to make sure to read
the owners manual closely.

The Virginia Department of Fire
Programs says a working fire alarm is
the first-line of defense -- actually
reducing the chance of dying in a fire

by half.

Some tips include installing
smoke alarms on every level of your
home and outside every sleeping area.

If you or someone in your home is
deaf, install an alarm that combines
flashing lights, vibrations and sound.

And you should test your smoke
alarm once a month.

treatable. A new study found the CT

scan is very good at spotting the
disease in its earliest stage. Giving
patients an excellent chase at
survival, while some researchers
believe high risk patients could
benefit from yearly CT Scans. Others
aren't so sure. Some experts think more
study is needed to prove the test can
improve survival rates.

A government advisory panel is
recommending routine vaccinations for
people over 6o to protect against
shingles. The skin rash can be very
painful and in some case cause loss of
vision and hearing. The vaccine was not
available until May when the FDA
approved ZOSTAVAX made by MERCK. The
government will consider the panels
advice before making the final
decision.

Wipe

One way to kick the habit may be to get
in shape. A new study finds that
smokers who combine exercise with

nicotine gum or patches are more likely
to quit than those that rely on
nicotine replacement therapy alone.
Those smokers who exercise but could
not quit, were more likely to at least
reduce their cigarette smoking and also
scored better on test measuring
respiratory health.

And those are some of the weeks top

yesterday... let's take you up to the
Northeast!

VO NAT Heavy winds and rain has caused

massive flooding along Cape Cod's
coastline Saturday.

Winds as high as 66 miles per
hour forced officials to close down
area beaches as well as dozens of roads
throughout the Cape.

As much as four inches of rain
fell and an estimated 30-thousand homes
and businesses lost power throughout
central and eastern Massachusetts.

One windsurfer said the heavy
winds tossed him across the beach and
road and into a front porch but luckily
he was not seriously hurt.

VO NAT Heavy rain and strong winds
knocked out power to tens of thousands
throughout the northeast and throughout
Ohio yesterday.

Around 28-thousand homes and
businesses were without power in and
around Cleveland.

Winds as high as 50 miles-an-hour
were measured across the buckeye state.

Low lying areas also saw some
major flooding.

Harvest Food Bank in Salem.

Folklife Festival has a program packed
with competition, exhibits and
entertainment.

Yesterday, it was the unexpected
that helped make it a day to remember.

The storm clouds cleared, after
dropping more than an inch of rain on
Friday, but the wet weather left plenty
of mud behind.

High winds blew across the Ferrum
College campus for much of the day,
threatening the tarps that covered many
of the vendors.

And the Horse Pull came to a
standstill, when a wayward pig escaped
from its enclosure and wandered into
the ring.

The animal made a break for

freedom, but was eventually recaptured
with the help of a herding dog.
