On a day when candy is king, vegetables

On her weekly trip to the grocery
store, Melissa Stoddard steers her
family through the produce aisle with
extra care. With the latest
salmonella outbreak shes now more
cautious than ever about what she
puts on their plates.
(SOT, Melissa Stoddard-too quick to
super)
"AM I GOING TO TAKE CAUTION? YES."
Though what she's avoiding still isn't
quite clear. C-D-C officials in
Atlanta think the bacteria may have
spread through produce, possibly
tomatoes or lettuce.
The outbreak stretches from Maine to
Arkansas, over 170 people are sick,
some have been hospitalized.
(WILDLINE: The multistate outbreak has
sickened over 170 people. Some
have been hospitalized.)
That's unlike the recent round of
e-coli traced back to tainted spinach.
Last month e-coli killed three people
and 200 more got sick.
(SUPER: Dr. MARC SIEGEL/NYU SCHOOL OF
MEDICINEe)
"you heard about the ecoli in spinach,
you should be aware of the fact
that salmonella tends not be as
agressive and not as much of a killer
as
that e-coli."
Still, salmonella is a threat. It can
cause cramping and vomiting. The
bacteria is especially dangerous for
those with a higher risk of
dehydration, like the elderly.
(Drew Levinson on camera)
"Connecticut is one of the 18 states
included in the outbreak, there is
no link yet to any chain of grocery
stores, restaurant or specific
product."
(SOT, DR. SIEGEL)
"because this salmonella is spreading
from state to state, it's a very
high likelihood that we're dealing with
packaged foods. after all, if
this was a single hamburger, it would
be in one state."
It's a state of alert for shoppers ...
who are warned to thoroughly wash
their vegetables to avoid getting sick.

GRAPHIC=NASA The Hubble Telescope can explore the
universe for a little while longer.
ENG#=2 VO-NAT
VO-NAT To the joy of astronomers, NASA has
approved a space shuttle mission to
repair the telescope.
The crew will add new cameras,
sensors and upgraded
batteries and that work should keep the
telescope working until 20-13.
The mission is planned for early
2008-
Without the mission, the 16-year-old
Hubble would have disintegrated in 2009
or ten.
