On a beautiful fall day the last
thing anyone is thinking about is
carbon monoxide and until this past
summer practically no one here at

Roanoke College ever did.

carbon monoxide leak at the Sections
Residence Hall sent 100 people to the
hospital and killed 91 year old Walter
Vierling.

A little over a month later, there
was another leak this time at a
fraternity house.

Luckily, no one was injured.

college installed carbon monoxide
detectors in most of its buildings.
The president also set up a task force
to come up with long term plans.

The recommendations are in and they
include more detectors, and weekly

inspections of all mechanical rooms.

The task force also recommends the
purchase of handheld carbon monoxide
detectors.

The college already has and the
detectors were put to good use during a
recent false alarm.

incident, rescue efforts were
complicated when Salem firefighters
missed two rooms.

As a result, the college plans to
give detailed floor plans to the Fire

stealing rolls of copper from the
electric company.

says they robbed this Appalachian Power
facility along Newbern Road.

With the rising price of scrap
metal, leaders with the company say
they have seen a big increase in the
theft of electrical equipment,
especially copper conductor.

There have been reports of
similar robberies in other Southwest

Virginia counties, and law enforcement
in those areas have been alerted about
the Pulaski arrests.

GRAPHIC=Fatal Fire A four- alarm fire at an historic

hotel in Reno, Nevada has killed at
least one person, and injured 31
others.

Mizpah hotel in the downtown casino
district.

The hotel opened in 19- 22, and is
listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.

Police say some people were able to
escape by jumping from second- floor

There's no word yet on what caused
the fire.

help solving what appears to be the
murder of a city man Monday night.

Officers responded to a shooting
call on South Street around 10.

There they found 26-year-old Darren
Lacon Carter lying on the ground
outside a home.

Carter was pronounced dead at the
scene.

Anyone with information should
contact the Danville Police.

three doctors to examine the mental
capacity of convicted killer Percy
Walton.

Motes allegedly strangled his sister,

Collinsville home.

A brief hearing was held
yesterday afternoon but a trial date
was not set.

Motes did however get a new
attorney.

His former lawyer was relieved

carbon monoxide incident at Roanoke
College has made a number of
recommenations.

July It was back in July when a carbon
monoxide leak at the Sections Residence
Hall sent more than a hundred people to
the hospital.

One person even died, 91 year old
Walter Vierling of Pearisburg.

Then a little over a month later,
there was another carbon monoxide leak,
this one at a fraternity. Luckily, no
one was injured.

Since that time, the college has
installed carbon monoxide detectors in
most of its buildings and a task force
is now recommending other changes.

help solving what appears to be the
murder of a city man Monday night.

Officers responded to a shooting
call on South Street around 10.

There they found 26-year-old Darren
Lacon Carter lying on the ground
outside a home.

Carter was pronounced dead at the
scene.

disagrees with a report issued earlier
this week.

The Morgan Quitno report ranked
Roanoke as one of the "least safest
cities" in America.

In a press release, the
department says "some crime rates were
higher" in 2005 than 2004, but violent
crimes were down.

The department also disagrees
with the research because Morgan Quitno
only uses the numbers of reported
crimes and not actual crimes.

carbon monoxide and until this past
summer practically no one here at
Roanoke College ever did.

hospital and killed 91 year old Walter
Vierling.

A little over a month later, there
was another leak this time at a
fraternity house.

The president also set up a task force
to come up with long term plans.

The recommendations are in and they
include more detectors, and weekly
inspections of all mechanical rooms.

purchase of handheld carbon monoxide
detectors.

The college already has and the
detectors were put to good use during a
recent false alarm.

metal, officials with the company say

hotel in Reno, Nevada has killed at
least one person, and injured 31

capacity of convicted killer Percy
Walton.
