up those illegal activities by failing
to pursue investigations. by tipping
off suspects and lying to state and
federal investigators. He's also
charged in a money-laundering scheme.
James Alden Vaught was allegedly one of
the deputies who resold drugs he'd
confiscated from drug dealers in the
line of duty.
Sergeant Vaught quit the force and
agreed to cooperate with federal
investigators after he got caught.

a 25-thousand dollar bond. He was
ordered to get rid of any firearms,
that include any at home as well. In

Henry County government.

In a resolution approved
unan-i-mous-ly, board members said they
are deeply troubled by the day's
events, and convinced that the
sheriff's ability to manage his
department has been damaged.

officers standing guard, investigators
spent the day searching for evidence
inside the building.

said the department was cooperating
with investigators, and continuing to
fulfill its responsibilities.

We met Frank Cassell when he first
ran for sheriff in 1991.
At the time, the issue was whether
Cassell was fit to be sheriff since he
retired from the State Police because
of a disability.

paid off since he won the election.
But over the years, Cassell has been
known to show his anger.
Take his re-election bid in 1995 when
Cassell's opponent ran ads comparing
him to Adolf Hitler.
However, the thing that's upset the
sheriff the most has been a lack of
money for his department.
He's often complained about the need
for a bigger jail and pay raises for
his deputies.

Cassell has often appeared in front of
the cameras after a major drug bust.
Back in 1996, he asked for State
Police help after U.S. News & World
Report ran an article about the
problems with crack cocaine in the
Sandy Level community.
Drugs continue to be a problem there
but 3 years ago Cassell declared the
situation has improved.

CONSIDERABLY OVER THE YEARS.

the Short Family murders.
Back in August 2002, Michael and Mary
Short were found murdered in their Oak
Level home, their 9 year old daughter
Jennifer was missing.
A national search turned up nothing
until a month later when Jennifer's
remains were found just over the border
in North Carolina.

Knoxville, Tennessee today to interview
a local murder suspect.

39-year old Carroll Lineberry, of
Galax, is charged with first degree
murder in the shooting death of a
security guard on Halloween night.

That's where police found the
body of 75-year old Neal Jackson
Hutton.
Authorities say he was stabbed to
death.
Police Chief Rick Clark says

charged here in Virginia, police say
they do plan to charge him with capital
murder.

setting the deadly Southern California
wildfire.

The same man police called a person
of interest yesterday, 36-year-old
Raymond Oyler is not only being charged
with arson but also murder for the
deaths of five forest service
firefighters.
Investigators believe he started
last weeks wind-whipped wildfire that
charred 40-thousand acres and destroyed
three dozen homes and they say it may
not be the only one. They also believe
he's connected to several other area
brushfires ignited last summer.

VO-NAT That's because a new study out shows
the health of obese mice greatly
improved thanks to a compound found in
the wine.
The study was conducted by Harvard
and the National Insititute on Aging.
Scientists found that big doses of
resveratrol (res-VAIR'ah-trol) lowered
the rate of diabetes, liver problems
and other fat-related ailments...its
also decreased fat-related deaths by 31
percent.
It's too early to tell if such a
miracle pill could help humans but
scientists are hopeful.

Radford University.
The Highlanders' head men's
basketbal coach Byron Samuels announced
tonight that he is resigning at the end
of this upcoming season.

Samuels, who is entering his
fifth year at the helm of the
Highlanders, cited personal and
professional reasons in his
resignation.
He took over as the head coach of
the program in 2002 after serving as an
assistant at Radford under coach Ron
Bradley.
In his four years at RU,
Samuels' teams won 50 games and lost
65.
Samuels was an assistant at
Tennessee before coming to Radford.
The Highlanders open the season
next Friday night at
Milwaukee-Wisconsin.
