a fatal shooting involving one of its
officers.
It happened just after midnight
in the 400 block of Frontier Road.

was responding to a domestic disorder
in an apartment on Frontier Road.
Police say that domestic dispute
was between Melvin Geovanny Castillo
Aquilar and his brother-in-law.
The brother-in-law called police
and when Officer Wood arrived he heard
screams from inside the apartment and
called for backup.

Officer Wood says he found
Aquilar in the apartment by himself and
that Aquilar was the one screaming.
Aquilar who is 30 years-old and
from Roanoke opened the door.
Officer Wood says Aquilar was
holding a steak knife and attempted to
stab him.
He ordered the suspect to drop
it.
When Aquilar failed to comply
Officer Wood fired his weapon twice
hitting the victim in the torso.
Officer Wood called for
paramedics but Aquilar was pronouced
dead at the scene.
Officer Wood who has been been
with the department for five years has
been placed on paid admninistrative
leave.

Now at the time of the shooting,
Officer Wood was the only police
officer on the scene. However, an
independent witness did tell police
that Officer Wood did order the suspect
to drop his knife.

department handling this shooting?
The Roanoke Police Department is
conducting a criminal investigation.
The outcome of that investiageion
will be turned over to the
Commonwealth's Attorney's office for
review.
The Roanoke Police Department
will also conduct an internal
investigation to determine whether the
officer followed proper pollicy and
procedure.
Now, Joy, the Disciplinary Review
Board will review the outcome of that
investigation.

It happened on US 220 north,
about 15 miles north of Martinsville.
The accident caused the
northbound lane to close and backed up
traffic.

says he's staying on the job -- at
least for now.

he'll carefully assess his ability to
carry out his duties as Sheriff.
He's facing federal charges along
with several of his current and former
deputies. He was indicted Thursday.
County supervisors are asking for his
resignation, saying the charges could

New research suggests Sudden Infant
Death Syndrome may have a biological
basis.

Scientists examined autopsy data from
31SIDS babies and found differences in
serotonin, a chemical that helps nerves
communicate.
When a baby's breathing is blocked the
brain stem normally adjusts by sending
a message to wake the baby or stimulate
breathing.
Researchers found SIDS babies may have
abnormal wiring that short circuits
this important alarm system.

Could a compound in red wine help the
obese stay healthy?.
Harvard researchers tested large
amounts of an extract called
resveratrol in obese mice.
They found the animals lived longer and
had healthy organs.
The compound seemed to slow the aging
process while blocking the negative
health effects of obesity.
It will be years before scientists know
if the same holds true for humans.

And another study shows coffee drinkers
have a substantially lower risk of
developing type 2 diabetes.. compared
to those who never drink a cup of Joe.
Researchers also found the same
protective effect in former coffee
drinkers.
They say it isn't coffee's caffeine,
because decaf drinkers got the same
benefit.
The study's author called for further
investigation and was unable to say how
much coffee people needed to drink in
order to get this protective effect.

It's just cold here, but the Lake
Effect snow machine has turned on
across the Great Lakes region!

VO NAT Some folks in the Cleveland, Ohio
area coped with up to six inches of new
snow Friday as another douse of Old Man
winter hit the region.
Video from the area showed
spun-out cars and people walking in
blizzard-like conditions in various
areas of the city Friday. The regions
famed snow belt - areas east of the
city of Cleveland - got the worst of
it.
Forecasters said the snow belt
was expected to get at least six inches
of new accumulation Friday.

GRAPHIC=SHOOTING Roanoke Police are investigating
a fatal shooting involving one of its
officers.
It happened just after midnight
in the 400 block of Frontier Road.

achaney@wdbj7.com Well, Joy Officer William D. Wood
was responding to a domestic disorder
in an apartment on Frontier Road.
Police say that domestic dispute
was between Melvin Geovanny Castillo
Aquilar and his brother-in-law.
The brother-in-law called police
and when Officer Wood arrived he heard
screams from inside the apartment and
called for backup.

Officer Wood says he found
Aquilar in the apartment by himself and
that Aquilar was the one screaming.
Aquilar who is 30 years-old and
from Roanoke opened the door.
Officer Wood says Aquilar was
holding a steak knife and attempted to
stab him.
He ordered the suspect to drop
it.
When Aquilar failed to comply
Officer Wood fired his weapon twice
hitting the victim in the torso.
Officer Wood called for
paramedics but Aquilar was pronouced
dead at the scene.
Officer Wood has been with the
department for five years and has been
placed on paid admninistrative leave.

HE USED FORCE TO PROTECT HIMSELF.

Now at the time of the shooting,
Officer Wood was the only police
officer on the scene. However, an
independent witness did tell police
that Officer Wood did order the suspect
to drop his knife.

department handling this shooting?
The Roanoke Police Department is
conducting a criminal investigation.
The outcome of that investiageion
will be turned over to the
Commonwealth's Attorneys Office for
review.
The Roanoke Police Department
will also conduct an internal
investigation to determine whether the
officer followed proper pollicy and
procedure.
Now, Joy, the Disciplinary Review
Board will assess the outcome of that
investigation.

office is investigating an armed
robbery that happened in the Mt. Hermon
community last night.

Number 3 on Franklin Turnpike at 9:15

They say two males entered the store
and one displayed a handgun and
demanded cash. The suspects fled on
foot with an undisclosed amount of
money..
The suspects were wearing black
facemasks, black gloves and blue coats
pulled over their heads.

murder charge against 24-year-old
William Charles Morva.

The Blacksburg double-murder
suspect is accused of overpowering a
deputy, taking his gun and shooting
Montgomery Regional Hospital guard
Derrick McFarland before escaping.
Prosecutors revealed in court
yesterday that they have an eyewitness
to the murder.
A patient in the hospital the
morning of the shooting says she saw
Morva shoot McFarland.
Morva is also charged with
capital murder in the death of Corporal
Eric Sutphin.
He was shot the following day,
during the manhunt.

used as a resort and conference center
