down the sign and arch at Crossroads
mall on Hershberger Road.
Built in the early 1960's....the
mall was of one the first in Roanoke
Valley.
The arch was added awhile later,
and became the icon for the shopping
center.
The decline of Crossroads began
after Tanglewood Mall opened its doors.
Advance Auto Parts recently moved
some of its corporate offices into the
former Circuit City building.

BUT TUESDAY AFTERNOON, ALONGSIDE THE
GARLAND AND LIGHTS, TARGET ATTRACTED A
REAL-LIFE RUDOLPH. AT 4-30, HE FOUND
THE AUTOMATIC DOOR. Greg Willey-Target

waited for the next door to open up,
then came moseying into the store.
AFTER DISCOVERING THE STORE'S SHINEY
FLOORS, THE 8-POINT BUCK BOLTED FOR THE
BACK. THE CHRISTMAS SECTION. WORD
SPREAD. Katie Johnson-Target We kind of
thought it was a joke, but then we
heard, no, really, there's a buck in
soft lines. CUSTOMERS RETREATED WHILE
WORKERS MOVED IN. Greg Willey-Target
Manager Of course, we're not really
trained in deer herding. AS EMPLOYEES
COAXED HIM TOWARD THE DOOR, THE DEER
MADE A DASH. RIGHT AT KATIE JOHNSON.

anticipating to see such a large deer.
Plus the rack on his head. I was...
whoa! RIGHT INFRONT OF THE X-BOXES, THE
DEER SLIPPED. KATIE COULD HELP BUT
HELP. I leaned in, thinking, I don't
know what I was thinking. I was trying
to help maybe, be guest friendly and
help out. AS THE BUCK RAN PAST THE LONG
LINE OF REGISTERS, CUSTOMERS AT THE
BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN KEPT CHECKING OUT.
After more than 10 minutes, a dozen
Target employees had the buck corralled
back here in the dairy section. That's
when somebody opened the fire door and
Katie helped shoe him out. I basically
stood here and said, "OK, please don't
turn right." IT DIDN'T, SCAMPERING
AWAY. BUT THE KICKER? AFTER VISITING
EVERY CORNER OF TARGET, THE DEER DIDN'T
DISTURB ONE ORNAMENT OR LEAVE BEHIND
ONE (CLEAR THROAT) PRESENT. Yeah, it
was comical. While the deer was in
Target, employees used the store's P-A
system to give a play-by-play of the
ordeal so shoppers would stay safe.
