not the news anyone wanted to hear..
One of the New River Valley's largest
employers is cutting almost a third of
its workforce.

File Tape This afternoon officials with
Volvo Trucks announced they're slashing
one thousand jobs at the Dublin plant.

They'll begin reducing the
workforce in January and continue to
cut jobs through the first quarter.

Right now about 31 hundred people
work at the plant.. one thousand is
about a third of the workforce there.

In a statement, a company
official said the reason for the
layoffs is a slowdown in demand for
heavy duty vehicles.

The official also said employees
were notified today, and the company
will work with other agencies to assist
them.

killed last night during an attempted
robbery at the store.

blocks away, after their car crashed
into a telephone pole.

Police have charged 38- year- old
Reginald Killingsworth with murder and
attempted robbery.

39- year- old Mendy Phelps is

charged with eluding police. Both
suspects are from Florida.

Today, family and friends said
Almajali was a good person who cared
about his customers.

plant ended with two arrests... and
more charges may come.

The confrontation erupted early
this morning when a replacement worker
and a friend were arrivng at the plant
in a car.. and they got into a fight
with striking workers..

Police say had to use pepper
spray to break it up.. even used a
taser gun on one man who jumped out of
the car and allegedly attacked a police
officer.

24-year-old Donnell Trimane Lea
and 21-year-old Kenneth Lamar Harris
are facing disorderly conduct and
assault charges.

Authorities are reviewing

videotape of the fight to see whether
any of the striking workers should also

activity that low carb diets that are high in

protein and fat.. may increase a
person's risk for coronary heart
disease.

But the study in the New England
Journal of Medicine found that was not
the case for the women they observed.
Researchers analyzed food
questionnaires from more 82-thousand
women between the ages of 30 and 55,
over a 20 year period. They documented
nearly 2-thousand new cases of coronary
heart disease. However, the findings
suggested that those who ate a low carb
diet did not increase their risk.

And when the women got more of
their fat and protein from vegetables
rather than animal sources they
moderately cut their heart disease
risk.

One local cardiologists says
while the study is important it still
leaves some unanswered questions.

that a veteran Hollywood actor has
died. A release from his family just
moments ago revealed Jack Palance died
this afternoon in his California home.

He capped his long career with a Best
Supporting Actor Oscar for 1991's City
Slickers. Jack Palance was 87 years
old.

goes on sale sale tomorrow in Tokyo-- a
whole week before it hits the U-S.

The PS-three has had some
troubles.. its release was delayed for
months because of technical issues.

And it's costs 600 dollars.. but
Sony says you get more bang for the
buck- the PS-3 isn't just for games.
It also has a DVD player, and wi-fi
