GRAPHIC=MARSHALL In a cruel twist of fate - the

charter plane carrying Marshall
University's football team to North
Carolina for tomorrow's game at East
Carolina finally took off about
two-and-a-half-hours late this
afternoon.

When the Air Boeing 727 first
readied for take-off from Tri-State
Airport at about 11 this morning an
engine started smoking.

Offficials said there was too
much fuel in the engine and the smoke
was from the burnoff.

All 150 passengers got off the
plane while it was checked out by
mechanics. They reboarded shortly after
1 o'clock. The plane took off just
before 1:30 and landed safely.

Eerily, today's incident comes
just four days before the 36th
anniversary of the Marshall plane crash
that killed 75 people, including most
of the football team, which was on its
way home from a game at East Carolina.

A movie chronicling Marshall's
rise from the 1970 crash hits theaters
nationwide December 22nd.

The museum is in Quantico, about 30
miles south of Washington.

It lets you experience the life of a
Marine -- everything from boot camp to
making an amphibious landing under
fire. And there's plenty of Marine
Corps history to take in.
