GRAPHIC= Fatal Shooting Roanoke police are investigating
a homicide.

Units were called to the Z-Mart
on Melrose around 10:30 last night.
According to a police report, a
male suspect shot a store clerk during
an attempted robbery.
The victim, a male, died while
being transported to the hospital.
The suspect fled in a vehicle and
was later apprehended on foot after a
police-pursuit.
The female driver of the vehicle
was also taken into custody.
Roanoke Police have not released
the names of the victim or the
suspects.

last night, following a last- ditch
plea effort to Governor Tim Kaine.
33-year-old John Yancey Schmitt
was executed by lethal injection for
the 1999 murder of a bank security
guard in Chesterfield.
Schmitt's attorneys had filed for
clemency from the governor, but Kaine
declined to intervene.
Schmitt's last words were quote
... "Come on with it."

man....almost six years after the
crime.

Two Danville police detectives
were honored yesterday for their role
in solving a cold murder case and
bringing his killers to justice.
Eddie Burke and Mike Wallace were
given plaques during a ceremony in
Danville City Hall.
Burke and Wallace helped bring to
justice the three men responsible for
murdering Tyree Wimbush in July of
1999.

against a Galax man accused of killing
two people in a two-state crime spree.

39 year old Carroll Lineberry is
charged with murder in both Virginia
and Tennessee for incidents over the
Halloween weekend.
He's accused of shooting a school
security guard in Tennessee in the
back, before stealing his car and
leading police on a long chase.
A judge found there was enough
evidence to move the case forward.
Lineberry is also charged with
capital murder in Galax for the
stabbing and beating death of a 75 year
old man.

electricity bill could be going up more
than expected.
Appalachian Power has filed a
request with the Virginia State
Corportation Commission seeking
approval to increase fuel components to
customers' bills.
If this happens, Appalachian
customers who use 1,000 kilowatt's an
hour in a billing month will see an
increase of more than three percent,
which is around two and a half dollars.
If passed it won't take affect
until the first of January.

some Hokie Birds.

Several months ago, 63 of these fiber
glass Hokie Bird statues were placed
all around the town of Blacksburg.
They quickly got a lot of attention
because several of the birds were
vandalized. In fact, there have been a
total of eleven incidents.
Organizers say what may have been a
joke to some was no laughing matter to
them.
