to the arrest of an arson suspect.
Shortly after midnight Tuesday, crews
responded to a fire in the 1300 block

of Staples Street.

They found an abandoned building
fully involved.

It took about 30 minutes to put it
out.

An investigation determined the fire
was suspicious in nature.

A citizen's tip led to the arrest of
20-year old Travis Duane Wooten at the
New River Valley Mall.

He has been charged with felony
arson, and is being held without bond..

And the situation has eased enough
to lift a tsunami warning.

There were worries after a powerful
earthquake hit just off the islands
between northern Japan and the Russian
Far East.

Thousands of residents in northern
Japan were forced to flee to high

ground, as authorities warned tsunamis
of as high as about six feet

could be on the way.

The initial tsunamis were minor, just
sixteen inches or less, starting

in the fishing town of Nemuro, in
northeastern Japan.

The tsunami warning was triggered by an
unusually strong earthquake,

measuring 8.1, which struck northeast
of Iturup, in the Kuril Islands.

Japan's state TV network NHK
continually broadcast a national map -

virtually the entire northern island of

Hokkaido, and the Pacific

coastline of Japan's main island,
Honshu, outlined in red and yellow,

showing areas vulnerable to potential
tsunami damage.

The disaster warning included coastline
near the Tokyo area.

Japan frequently experiences natural
disasters such as earthquakes and

tsunamis, and has one of the most
elaborate disaster management systems

in Iraq - and then almost lost hope as
they tried to remember all who have
fallen.

Ryan Howard.

The Alleghany County native died in
August 2004 when his helicopter,
similar to the one you see here,
crashed in Iraq.

Since that time, his family has
worked to build a lasting memorial in

Ryan's statue built.
