considering that question, and today a
consultant offered his recommendations.

And as Joe Dashiell reports the
proposal that council favors takes full
advantage of the Roanoke River.

TREAT THE ROANOKE RIVER AS THE GEM THAT

Mayor Nelson Harris said he
didn't want to sound like the stingy
uncle, but he warned council not to
lose sight of the cost, or the need for
additional athletic fields.

But he and other members of
council say they are excited about
transforming this site into a first
class facility for Roanoke and the
region.

Committee voted to ask Mayor Nelson
Harris and council member Bev
Fitzpatrick to give up their
democratic-party designation.

The group says Harris and
Fitpatrick broke party bylaws by
supporting the INDEPENDENT party
candidates in the May council election,
instead of the existing democratic
ticket.

huge loss after a fire killed their
mother this weekend.

The fire broke out in this house
early Sunday morning in Southeast
Roanoke.

Fire crews worked their way into

the house and found 71-year-old Carolyn
Perry.

Perry was rushed to the hospital
- but she didn't survive.

Today her family toured the house
for the first time.

Her son, who drove in from
Nashville, says he was planning on
coming up later this week for
Thanksgiving dinner.

Now he plans to spend that day
burying his mother.

playing with a lighter is responsible
for ANOTHER Sunday fire in Roanoke.

This one was reported shortly

Lafayette Boulevard, a fire that left
five people homeless.

kills three teenagers and sends at
least 30 others to the hospital.

bus plummeted 30 feet off an interstate
overpass.

Police are looking for a small
car that apparently came close to or

who plowed his car into a farmer's

market killing ten people will not be
going to prison.....

Today, a Los Angeles County judge
sentenced 89 year old George Weller to
five years probation.

The judge says even though the
defendant deserves prison time....it
makes no sense considering his age and
health.

residents will pick a permanent sherrif
during a special election next
November.

the county the green light to hold the
special election the same day as the
general election - that's November 6th.

County officials say once voters
elect the sheriff of their choice, that
person will immediately take office and

not be over just yet.

A recent estimate puts the cost
of building a new stadium off Price's
Fork Road at 3-point-6 million dollars.

That's more than a million-and-a
half over the original budget.

Montgomery County School leaders
say construction costs have gone up
more than 25-percent since the project
was first discussed.

The school board meets tomorrow
night.

Administrators are recommending
that the board go ahead with the
project and work out the funding
shortfall with the Board of Supervisors

sure dozens of families have a happy
Thanksgiving feast.

Life Community Church were busy packing
boxes of food for more than 60 area
families in need.

Each box will have a bird and all
the trimmings.

80 percent of the non-perishable
items were donated and the turkeys were
