and many holiday travelers may have
noticed gas prices are climbing a
bit...

Triple A says anticipated demand
for gasoline over the Thanksgiving
holiday travel period may be pushing
prices somewhat higher.

But some good news for
us....While the average U-S price for
gasoline is 2-23....in Virginia it's
2-11 making it the sixth lowest
statewide average in the nation. In
Roanoke, the average price is 2-10 a
gallon.

indicates close to a quarter of the
people in our viewing area will be
traveling for the holiday.

VO-NAT Of the 500 people we surveyed, 76

per cent said they would be staying
home.

Of those travelling, 20 percent
say they're driving, and while the
percentage doesn't sound that high,
it's still a lot of people on the
highways at one time.

And one percent say they're

because of it, another 11 are open but
only partially.

Take the one in Troutville. It's
currently undergoing a 300-thousand
dollar renovation.

The project includes new toilet and
sinks in the bathroms, an air
conditioning system, picnic tables, and
water fountains.

But the work won't be finished until
the first of the year which means
travelers will have to use porta johns
this holiday weekend.

Despite the inconveniences, the
facelift is needed. When we visited
the Troutville facility last March, we
found among other things broken sinks
and several toilets out of order. And
take a look at this picnic table, it
hadn't seen a paint brush in years.

retiring police chief as In the midst
of fighting a 40-million dollar lawsuit
against Christiansburg and its police
department.....town leaders also have
to find a new police chief.

This week, attorneys for the
town asked the judge to dismiss the
suit...in which..

a Montgomery County woman claims a
female police officer failed to protect
her from an abusive husband because the
officer was secretly in a relationship
with him.

Wendy Diane Hall Covington made
the allegations in a 40 million dollar
suit filed this month in federal court.

In a statement her attorney
claims Covington's civil rights were
severely violated by the defendants and
that this case addresses the importance
of having an independent and unbiased
police force. He says they look
forward to trying the case.

joined the force in 1975 as a patrol
officer and worked his way up the
ranks, becoming chief in 1999.

Brumfield told the town manager
several months ago he'd most likely
retire this year.

The 55 year old says he doesn't
just plan to sit in his rocker..he'll
do more community service and may even
get a part-time job.

Brumfield plans to stick around
until at least March to help train his

killing two officers waived his right
to a speedy trial today.

24 year old William Charles Morva
escaped police custody in August.

He's charged with capital murder

in the deaths of a sheriff's deputy and
a hospital security officer.

Morva's scheduled to be back in
court next month for a hearing with
mental health experts.

prison for murdering three people has
now pleaded guilty to shooting his
estranged girlfriend in the face last
spring.

57-year-old Donnie Don Beverley
entered the plea agreement today in
Lynchburg Circuit Court.

40-year-old Stacy Bartley May 19th as
she sat in her car outside the American
Hoffmann plant where she worked.

Bartley had recently broken off

killing three people in Amherst County.

forced to close.

Police say he sexually abused a
15-year-old boy for nearly six-months.

owns 'Arnold's and Reece's' - a

on underage drinking by using young
people as decoys at retailers and
restaurants.

dozen establishments in the town.

Thirty-five percent were caught
selling to the underage buyers, and
THAT resulted in eleven misdemeanor

GRAPHIC=Explosion Authorities in Massachusetts, say

it "looks like a war zone" after a
chemical plant explosion early this
morning.

Take a look at this video....

The explosion was at a business
that makes solvents and inks.

No one was inside at the time but
officials say nearly 90 homes have been
damaged.

A nearby bakery and pizza shop
were leveled by the explosion and more
than 100 people had to be evacuated
from the surrounding area.

Remarkably, fewer than a dozen
people sustained minor injuries....

Authorities say it's too early to
speculate what caused the explosion.

pooled into one national class

He also rejected the plaintiffs'
proposal to try all of the cases under

the laws in New Jersey, where Merck is

Merck withdrew the drug from the
market two years ago because of
