(END SOT) It's an invisible threat in China a flu

virus passed between birds that could
mutate into a deadly sickness killing
millions of humans...but 3 years after
the bird flu first surfaced, there s
STILL no pandemic in sight

Chinese epidemiologist Dr. Zeng Guang
says the cold weather brings increased
danger.

SOT: Dr. Zeng Guang/in Mandarin with

English voiceover

The prevention of a flu pandemic is
like the prevention of a third World
War, he says. You can never give up!

Celia Hatton On-Camera Bridge:

But whether officials admit it or not,
they re walking a fine line when
dealing with the bird flu not wanting
to scare the public too much... but
also making the problem known so that
it stays on the top of the Chinese
government s packed agenda.

Doctor Julie Hall knows the cry wolf
problem all too well she s an
infectious disease expert with the
World Health Organization in Beijing.

SOT: Dr. Julie Hall/WHO

We re probably entering not necessarily
the most dangerous time but certainly
the most difficult time in terms of
maintaining that investment and the
commitment that we ve seen.

The worry? Half the people living in
China s countryside have no access to
healthcare and their animals aren t
monitored by veterinarians. If the bird
flu begins to spread between humans in
rural areas, officials could lose a
chance to contain the virus.

The Chinese government went into

overdrive when the virus infected birds
across China last yearBut many complain
China s state-run press has been slow
to circulate new information.

MOS: In Mandarin with English voiceover

I wish more information on the bird flu
could be released, says this man. The
more, the better!

Experts agree: The more education, the
better China can prepare for a possible
pandemicand until that time, daily life
can continue as before. Celia Hatton,

GRAPHIC=TECH/UVA Good afternoon everybody and

Happy Thanksgiving. While most of the
students at both Tech and UVA are at
home enjoying the holiday, the football
players on each side stayed on campus
to prepare for Saturday's battle for
the Commonwealth Cup, which makes for a
little different work week.

fact that UVA is at least a 17 point
underdog in the eyes of the oddsmakers.

Work to re-open the Pulaski
Theatre is finally winding down.

The marquee went up this fall and
the outside's been painted.

The 94 year old building closed
in 1991, but a citizens group raised
more than 800-thousand dollars to
renovate it.

The theatre will seat 535
people... 200 on the balcony alone.

It will be used to show
second-run movies, performances,
concerts.

Organizers hope to light up the
marquee for the first time in February.
