RUN03 THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF THE UNITED

STATES OF AMERICA ...

Last week in Iraq, dozens of
American soldiers became citizens of
the country they were already risking
their lives to serve ... Tessa Gerlach
marked the occasion by losing her
"alien" status in true Marine Corps
style.

SOT SOT FULL 17:28:56

IN Q=She had an DALE GERLACH/MOTHER OF SOLDIER: SHE HAD

AN AMAZING, IT WAS AN AMAZING
EXPERIENCE AND SHE'S THRILLED TO BITS,
YES. ESPECIALLY BEING FLOWN TO BAGHDAD
AND IT TOOK PLACE IN ONE OF THE
PALACES, WE'VE GOT PICTURES OF HER
SITTING ON THE THRONE SO THAT'S KIND OF
AWESOME.

RUN16 (end sot)

OUT Q=kind of awesome. The Gerlachs moved to the United

States 13 years ago from South Africa.

Since then, Dale and her son have
become citizens, but Tessa was already
a Marine before she made the leap
herself.

Patriotism runs deep in this
family ... as does a sense of duty.

SOT SOT FULL 17:26:55

IN Q=Being the proud DALE GERLACH: BEING THE PROUD MARINE

THAT SHE IS, I THINK IF SHE HAD NOT

GONE TO IRAQ, SHE WOULD HAVE FELT THAT
SHE HAD NOT COMPLETED THE ORIGINAL IDEA
OF BECOMING A MARINE IN THE FIRST
PLACE.

RUN10 (end sot)

OUT Q=the first place. Thanksgiving, understandably, was

both a good and a difficult day in the
Gerlach household.

While Tessa was away, their other
daughter Kirsty was home with the
family.

But she too is serving, on a
hospital ship in the Navy ... and next
month, she'll also head to the Persian
Gulf.

Naturally, Kirsty is on track to
become a U-S citizen too.

SOT SOT FULL 17:27:16

IN Q=We've already DALE GERLACH: WE'VE ALREADY LIVED HERE

FOR 13 YEARS, THEY'VE BEEN BROUGHT UP
HERE, THEY WENT TO SCHOOL HERE AND AS
FAR AS WE'RE CONCERNED THEY ARE
AMERICANS, DEFINITELY.

RUN10 (end sot)

OUT Q=Americans, definitely. And it won't be long before they'll

need another flag pole on the front of
their home ... Dale's son is in the
Army ROTC at Radford.
