isn't the only thing on the defensive
in Martinsville these days.

Earlier this month, police say an
off the field episode resulted in a
teenager stabbing a man.

All of this has prompted school
administrators to take a closer look at
its security.

One thing they've done is move
football games from Friday nights to
Saturday afternoons, but as News 7's
Aleesha Chaney shows us they're taking
it a step further.

the only one concerned about its game
plan.

The Martinsville Police
Department is also reviewing its
strategy before game time.

taking any chances when it comes to
safety.

A recent stabbing at the Bulldogs
Stadium, has the school moving to a new
pace when it comes to security.

The high school has beefed up the
presence of law enforcement to 10
officers

surrounding the entire field, with 3 of
those officers stationed next to the
concession stand where this incident
occurred.

THESE FENCES HERE WE COULDN'T
UNDERSTAND WHY IT THEY LET IT GO ON
BECAUSE YOU ARE JUST ASKING FOR
TROUBLE.

congregating along the fence is
creating a problem.

Now, they're strictly prohibiting
that behavior.

To keep foot traffic moving, the
school has placed these barriers around
the field and repositioned EMS trucks

to prevent people from hanging out in
restricted areas.

And the school has law
enforcement on hand ready to take
proactive measures.

BECAUSE IF PEOPLE DONT FEEL SAFE AT THE
GAME, YOUR FANS AREN'T GOING TO COME

THE GAME IF PEOPLE AREN'T GOING TO FEEL
SAFE AND ENJOY THE ATMOSPHERE.

Martinsville High School plans to
keep these changes through this school
year.

As for next year, the school says
all major home games for Martinsville

GRAPHIC=Fatal Accident A Floyd County man is dead after

crashing his car around eight Friday
night on Route 6-19.

State Police say 44-year-old

Johnny Ray Cox of Willis was driving
South when he ran off the road, smashed
into a fence and a tree, then flipped
his van.

Authorities say Cox was not
wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from
the vehicle.

He later died at the hospital.

Police do not believe alcohol was
involved.

in the Glen Wilton community of
Botetourt County -

The fire broke out some time
yesterday afternoon.

A neighbor saw smoke coming from
the house and tried to alert the owner,
but no one was home at the time.

Unfortunately, a dog did not make
it out of the home.

The cause is under investigation.

The rain that passed through our
area last week caused problems to our
north.

Coastal residents near

Providence, RI have finally been able
to begin cleaning their homes as the
Pawtuxet River dropped from flood
levels yesterday.

Heavy rains flooded the area
Thanksgiving Day.

Residents are fed up with the
flooding they say always occurs when it
rains hard, but officials would have to
spend millions to block the water.

Icebergs floating off the New
Zealand coast Saturday attracted
spectators!

Air tour operators have struck a
small bonanza off New Zealand as scores
of tourists pay to fly over icebergs
floating near the coast.

It is rare for whole icebergs to drift
so far north before melting, but a cold
snap around southern New Zealand has
brought the towering visitors to the
region.

Last year, icebergs were seen in New
Zealand waters for the first time in 56
years.

honeymoon, a New York man will be the
focus of a prayer vigil today.

Indian Reservation.

Search teams with dogs as well as

Finally in medical news, a recent
change in how some doctors do laser
vision correction with Lasik. Instead
of using a blade to create the corneal
flap, they are now using a laser,
called Intralase. Creating this flap is
the first step in the procedure. This
flap is pulled back so doctors can
reach the area where the another laser
is used to reshape the cornea.
