County sheriff's department for the
last 15 years was back in federal court
today as a criminal defendant.

several charges, including obstruction
of justice, making false statements to
federal investigators and money
laundering.

No trial date has been set.

Cassell and 19 others- nearly
half of them former deputies- - could
all be tried together sometime next
year.

One man pled guilty today and
another is expected to shortly, part of
their agreement to cooperate with the
government.

apparent drunk driving accident last

night took the life of a teenager

hospital.

State police say it happened
around 6:30 last night on Bethlehem
Road.

Last Night Troopers say a van driven by
50 year old Robert Gene Barker of
Moneta crossed the center line and hit
a car head-on.

A 15-year-old passenger in the
car, Joel Wayne Nichols of Glade Hill,
died at the hospital.

The 17-year-old driver, whose
identity has not been released, and two
other passengers, Greg And Teresa Neil
were injured, both are in critical
condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial
Hospital.

The driver of the van, Robert
Barker, is listed in fair condition. He
has been charged with D-U-I, and police
say more charges are pending.

rude awakening this morning when a
police chase ended on their front
porch.

Police say an officer was chasing
two attempted robbery suspects around
2:30 this morning.

One of the suspects lost
control of his car and crashed into a
house in the 800 block of Harrison
Avenue.

The two men then ran off but
were caught a short distance away.

18-year-old Deonte Lamar
Mayfield and 20-year-old Joshua Antonio
Salters, both of Roanoke, have been
charged with robbery and eluding
police.

decide whether to allow hunting on
Sundays.

has filed a bill to allow Sunday
hunting from noon until half- an- hour
after sunset.

hunters to gauge attitudes on the idea.

A similar survey ten years ago
showed hunters divided on the issue
with those in Southwest and Southside
MORE opposed than hunters in more urban
regions.

Survey USA poll conducted earlier this
month, which revealed 66- percent favor

the ban.

For years Adam Morgan has been
shooting deer on his game cube.

Recently, he traded his joystick for
a hunting rifle, and it didn't take him
long to do something truly amazing.

ADAM MORGAN: I'VE KILLED FIVE IN THE
PAST 7 DAYS, IN 7 DAYS OF HUNTING.

That's right Adam has killed five
deer, three bucks and two does.

Not bad considering he only got his
hunting license this season and get
this, he's just 13 years old.

with animal cruelty and neglect will
have to serve more jail time and pay
one-thousand dollars in fines.

for Monica Yates who faces felony
charges in circuit court tomorrow
morning.

This, after animal control
officers found 25-dogs and cats
undernourished and living in their own

waste.

According to prosecutors-
officers eventually found three-dead
puppies in her possession.

Under a plea deal - Yates will
also face 12-months suspended jail
sentence and 12-months supervised
probation.

She also faces charges of
mismanaging more than one-million
dollars as a financial advisor for
Merrill Lynch.

a murder trial this afternoon.

2004 19 year old Zachary Linkous
entered an alford plea of guilt to
voluntary manslaughter and use of a
firearm in the commission of a felony.

That means he acknowledges
there's enough evidence to convict him,

but does not admit his guilt.

Linkous shot his 15 year old
friend and neighbor,

He was originally charged with
first degree murder.

Washington was shut down for about
three hours after authorities say a
drinking bottle and coffee mug were
found in the rest room.

A law enforcement official says
there was also a note with threatening
language referring to bombs and
anthrax.

However, investigators now say
there was no threat.

ended two hours later with the
discovery of a body......Police say a
woman came upon a head on crash just
off of Interstate 64 near Croaker......

when she got out to help, a man
knocked her to the ground and stole her
vehicle....the suspect crashed the
S-U-V about 15 minutes later...and
while walking along the side of the
road HE was struck by three vehicles
and killed....

About two hours later police
found the body of a two year old girl
in the driveway of a vacant York County
home, near where the head on collision
occurred.

Police refuse to discuss whether
they believe the deaths were related...

The child's death is being
investigated as a homicide.

Bloomberg says there will be a "fair
and thorough" investigation of a deadly
police shooting in Queens over the
weekend.

into a car, killing an unarmed groom
and injuring two of his friends.

The men had just left a bachelor
party in Queens.

Authorities say they suspected
one of the men had a gun....but no

on for a new police chief in
Christiansburg.

February.

Town manger Lance Terpenny
(TER-penny) said he expects a handful
of INTERNAL applicants....but the job
notice has also been put out in
surrounding states, the police chief
association and on their website.

Town leaders hope to have a
new chief by mid February. The
position is appointed by the town
council and the pay scale starts at
55-thousand, 5-hundred dollars and tops
out at 70-thousand.

train set to good use.

Milton Brockmeyer's been building a
too-scale, replica of the town.

It's 80 feet long, 20 feet wide
and fills his ENTIRE basement.

He made the buildings out of
cereal boxes and the silo's are from
old beer cans.

He captured the town as it was,
during its hey-day in the 1950's.

Brockmeyer wants the town to put

(END SOT) It's nearly a mile from the nearest

highway, though not far from the
railroad tracks, of course.

Claudius Crozet built this tunnel
before the Civil War, and it opened the
western frontier of Virginia to the
industrial revolution.

IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING TO BEHOLD
TO SEE THE TRAINS ACTUALLY COME THROUGH
HERE. JUST THE NOISE.

The railroad replaced the tunnel during
World War II.

Someone decided it would be a good
place to store pressurized gas, so they
built two 14-foot thick concrete walls.

It didn't work.

We wanted to see the inner tunnel, so
we climbed through the water pipe that
serves as an entrance.

There's no way to stop the water flow,

of course, but they will have to take
the pipe out and the entire bulkhead.
So that one day people can ride
bicycles all the way through the Crozet
