murder trial late this afternoon.

19 year old Zachary Linkous
entered an alford plea to voluntary
manslaughter and a gun charge.

That means, he acknowledges
there's enough evidence to convict him,
but does NOT admit his guilt.

Linkous shot and killed his
friend and neighbor, 15 year old Edward
Bertrand in the garage of a home in
2004.

He was originally charged with
first degree murder and scheduled to go
on trial next week.

Linkous will be sentenced by a
judge in February.

three-sentences was handed down to
Monica Yates.

Yates, who's currently behind
bars, was given additional jail time
and fined one-thousand dollars on
charges of animal cruelty.

Under a plea deal - Yates will
also face a suspended jail sentence and
probation.

She's due in circuit court
tomorrow morning on FELONY charges.

Yates also faces charges that she
mis-managed more than one-million
dollars.

sheriff department for the last 15
years was back in federal court -- this
time as a criminal defendant.

Frank Cassell pled NOT guilty to
several charges, including obstruction
of justice, making false statements to
federal investigators and money
laundering.

No trial date has been set.

Cassell and 19 other people-
-about half of them former deputies- -
could all be tried together sometime

One man pled guilty today and
another is expected to shortly, as part
of their agreement to cooperate with
the government.

Thanksgiving compared to last year.

State police say at least 15
people died this year -- one was a cop,
two were infants, two were bikers, and
two were pedestrians.

Five of the wrecks involved

wake up to....a police chase ending on
our front porch. But it did happen to
a few folks in Roanoke.

Police say an officer was chasing
two attempted robbery suspects around
2:30 this morning.

One of the suspects lost
control of his car and crashed into a
house in the 800 block of Harrison
Avenue.

The two men then ran off and
were apprehended a short distance away.

18-year-old Deonte Lamar
Mayfield and 20-year-old Joshua Antonio
Salters, both of Roanoke, have been
charged with robbery and eluding
police.

trying to piece together a bizzare
series of events.

Police say it all started when a
woman tried to offer help after she
pulled up to a head-on collision
yesterday morning just off interstate
64 near Croaker.

When she got out to help, a man
knocked her to the ground and stole her
vehicle but he ended up crashing the
S-U-V about 15 minutes later...and
while walking along the side of the
road HE was struck by three vehicles
and killed....

About two hours later police
found the body of a two year old girl
in the driveway of a vacant York County
home, near where the head on collision
occurred.

Police refuse to discuss whether
they believe the deaths were related...

The child's death is being
investigated as a homicide.

Sundays.

has filed a bill to allow Sunday
hunting from noon until half- an- hour
after sunset.

hunters to gauge attitudes on the idea.

A similar survey ten years ago
showed hunters divided on the issue
with those in Southwest and Southside
MORE opposed than hunters in more urban

Survey USA poll conducted earlier this
month, which revealed 66- percent favor

after a bomb scare today.

suspicious liquid was found in a

A Fire spokesman said authorities also

and described the objects as "a

found a hand grenade while walking into

shooting over the weekend that left a
groom dead on his wedding day.

rounds at several men as they left a
bachelor party.

Police said they suspected one of
them may have had a gun...but no weapon
was found.

no mistakes with a drug raid that left
a 92-year old woman shot dead on her
front lawn....

Police insist officers bought
drugs at the woman's house...they later
returned with a search warrant and
broke down her door.

That's when she allegedly fired

shots at three officers before she was
killed.

in the road for the Hokies this season
but the fact of the matter is that they
did finish with 10 wins.

What remains to be determined is
what bowl game Tech will be attending.

The possiblity does include a trip to
the B-C-S.

It is a bit remote, but the
Hokies are currently the highest ranked
A-C-C team in the latest B-C-S
standings.

That means that the Sugar Bowl
could still take the Hokies if they
wanted. The chances of that are very
unlikely.
