Cassell was arraigned today.

comes one month after he was indicted,
along with a dozen of his deputies.

The 68-year old former state
trooper had hoped to hang onto his job
as Sheriff by taking administrative
leave until the case was resolved.

Two weeks ago he announced his
retirement.

No trial date's been set.

It's unclear whether the
defendants will be tried together.

pled guilty, part of the racketeering
conspiracy.

It was the "controlled delivery"
of Ketamine to Reed a year and a half
ago that got the case started.

Reed told authorities the house
where the Ketamine was delivered
belonged to a sergeant in the Henry

County Sheriff's Department.

plea to voluntary manslaughter and a
gun charge.

That means, he acknowledges

there's enough evidence to convict him,
but does NOT admit his guilt.

Linkous shot and killed his
friend and neighbor, 15 year old Edward
Bertrand in the garage of a home in
2004.

Linkous says Bertrand was his
best friend and the gun accidentally
went off, hitting Bertrand in the
stomach.

Edward Bertrand's family says the
pair were not close friends and they do
not believe it was an accident.

accident last night in Franklin County
took the life of a teenager

State police say it happened
around 6:30 last night on Bethlehem
Road.

Last Night Troopers say a van driven by
50 year old Robert Gene Barker of
Moneta crossed the center line and hit
a car head-on.

A 15-year-old passenger in the
car, Joel Wayne Nichols of Glade Hill,
died at the hospital.

The 17-year-old driver, whose
identity has not been released, and two
other passengers were injured.

Teresa Neil and Greg Neil are
both in critical condition at Carilion
Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the van, Robert
Barker, is listed in fair condition. He
has been charged with D-U-I, and police

say more charges are pending.

rude awakening this morning when a
police chase ended on their front
porch.

two attempted robbery suspects around
2:30 this morning.

One of the suspects lost
control of his car and crashed into a
house in the 800 block of Harrison
Avenue.

The immigrants and slave laborers who

The east end of the tunnel is 56 feet
lower than the west, serving as its own
drain pipe.

thick concrete bulkheads to seal off a
section of the tunnel as a place to
store pressurized gas.

INQ= When they figured out the seal wouldn't

hold natural gas, they simply abandoned
the project and left these buckets and
all the workmen's tools right in this
inner tunnel.

In the meantime, the pipe that breaches
the bulkheads provides a point of entry
to the inner tunnel- -for those
adventuresome enough to share the space
with running water and a migratory bat
