facing a murder trial.

19 year old Zachary Linkous
entered an alford plea to voluntary
manslaughter and a gun charge yesterday
afternoon.

That means, he acknowledges
there's enough evidence to convict him,
but does NOT admit his guilt.

Linkous shot and killed his
friend and neighbor, 15 year old Edward
Bertrand in the garage of a home in
2004.

He was originally charged with
first degree murder and scheduled to go
on trial next week.


Linkous will be sentenced by a
judge in February.

County woman accused of neglecting her
pets.

Yesterday the first of at least
three-sentences was handed down to
Monica Yates, who has had three puppies
die in her care.

Yates, who's currently behind
bars, was given additional jail time
and fined one-thousand dollars on
charges of animal cruelty.

Under a plea deal - Yates will
also face a suspended jail sentence and
probation.

She's due in circuit court today
on FELONY charges.

Yates also faces charges that she
mis-managed more than one-million

dollars.

to figure out a bizarre series of
events.

Police say it all started when a
woman tried to offer help after she
pulled up to a head-on collision Sunday
morning just off interstate 64 near
Croaker.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny and pleasant.

Wednesday: Partly sunny. High: 70

When she got out to help, a man
knocked her to the ground and stole her
vehicle but he ended up crashing the
S-U-V about 15 minutes later...and
while walking along the side of the
road HE was struck by three vehicles

and killed....

About two hours later police
found the body of a two year old girl
in the driveway of a vacant York County
home, near where the head on collision
occurred.

Police refuse to discuss whether
they believe the deaths were related...

The child's death is being
investigated as a homicide.

last fifteen years was back in federal
court yesterday-- this time as a
criminal defendant.

Former sheriff Frank Cassell
pled NOT guilty to several charges,
including obstruction of justice,
making false statements to federal
investigators and money laundering.

No trial date has been set.

Cassell and 19 other people-
-about half of them former deputies- -
could all be tried together sometime
next year.

One man pled guilty yesterday,
and another is expected to shortly, as
part of their agreement to cooperate

with the government.

from federal agents closing in on the
department, to insinuating ex-sheriff
Frank Cassel tried to find refuge in a
church before heading to court.

Price says the video might appear

February.

Town manger Lance Terpenny
(TER-penny) said he expects a handful
of INTERNAL applicants....but the job
notice has also been put out in
surrounding states, the police chief
association and on their website.

Town leaders hope to have a
new chief by mid February. The
position is appointed by the town
council and the pay scale starts at
55-thousand, 5-hundred dollars and tops
out at 70-thousand.

County after an apparent drunk driving
accident.

State police say it happened
around 6:30 Sunday night on Bethlehem

Sunday Night Troopers say a van driven by
50 year old Robert Gene Barker of
Moneta crossed the center line and hit
a car head-on.

A 15-year-old passenger in the
car, Joel Wayne Nichols of Glade Hill,
died at the hospital.

The 17-year-old driver, whose
identity has not been released, and two
other passengers were injured.

Teresa Neil and Greg Neil are
both in critical condition at Carilion
Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the van, Robert
Barker, is listed in fair condition. He
has been charged with D-U-I, and police
say more charges are pending.

whether to allow hunting on Sundays.

VO-NAT Danville Delegate Danny Marshall


has filed a bill to allow Sunday
hunting from noon until half- an- hour
after sunset.

*CG locator Bedford Co. The Department of Game and Inland This Month Fisheries is currently surveying
hunters to gauge attitudes on the idea.

A similar survey ten years ago
showed hunters divided on the issue
with those in Southwest and Southside
MORE opposed than hunters in more urban
regions.

That mirrors a regional News 7-
Survey USA poll conducted earlier this
month, which revealed 66- percent favor
the ban.

train set to the town of Pulaski.

But this is no ordinary model.

Since the 1940's, 91-year-old
retired dentist Milton Brockmeyer's
been building a too-scale, replica of
the town.

It's 80 feet long, 20 feet wide
and fills his ENTIRE basement.

He made the buildings out of
cereal boxes and the silo's are from
old beer cans.

He captured the town as it was,
during its hey-day in the 1950's.

Brockmeyer wants the town to put
it on display so others can take a look
back into the past.
