The case is revving up ... over how
much say the government has about
what comes out of your tailpipe.
This pivotal case revolves around the
regulation of greenhouse gas
emmissions ... that many scientists say
spur global warming.
(nats: )
Represented in the case before the
supreme court ... a dozen states, 3
cities and 13 enviornmental groups.
On the other side.. The Environmental
Protection Agency together with
lawyers from the automobile industry.
Plantiffs argue the EPA, has shirked
its duty to enforce the Clean Air
Act and protect the american public
By refusing to limit emisions from
cars, trucks and power plants.
(ALISON HARMELIN/BRIDGE/SUPREME COURT)
For environmentalists, it seems like a
no-brainer that the EPA should be
easing global warming.
But according to the EPA, carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases are
not pollutants and don't fall under the
Clean Air Act.
So they don't have the power to
regulate them.
That's the official stance from the
Bush Administration and the EPA ...
but the EPA's own labor unions
disagree.
sot: Dwight Welch/EPA Union Co-chair
"We support the case that the epa
should regulate carbon dioxide and
other greenhouse gases"
The Bush Administration says the link
between global climate change and
greenhouse gases is not fully
understood.
And at last check .. cars in the U.S.
made up for an estimated 7 percent
of worldwide fossil fuel emmisions.
The question .. whether this country
should foot the bill for cleaning
up what some say is a tiny percentage
of the problem.
It may be a small precentage, but
Massachusetts's Attorney General
called it the most pressing
enviornmental case in decades.

GRAPHIC=ACC The Virginia Cavaliers will not
be in any bowl games after finishing
the season with 5 and 7 overall record.
However, the Cavaliers defense,
which came into this season with many
questions, was considered by many to be
fairly solid in the second half of the
season.
It's an area that Coach Al Groh
says he can build on for next season.

While the defense exceeded
expectations, the offense wasn't very
successful at all.
The Wahoo's scored either 1 or no
Touchdowns in 6 games this season under
the direction of first- year Offensive
Coordinator Mike Groh, who has
previously only coached under his
father.

backup quarterback and stepped in for
the injured Ben Mauk, won the honor
yesterday.
Skinner, who received 48 of a

Now Skinner hopes to lead his
upstart 10 win team over the Yellow
