Association of the New River Valley
presented Eric Sutphin's family and
colleagues with a special framed
tribute.

The organization also renamed its
officer of the year award in honor of
Corporal Sutphin, an officer who was
well known and liked in the mental
health community.

they're not getting any ... and now
community leaders hope to put pressure
on those looking into how a Lynchburg
man died while in police custody two
months ago.

Tonight About a hundred people turned out :00 for a community rally tonight to hear
more about the case and the questions
surrounding it.

46-year-old Clarence Beard died
while police were arresting him inside
his Greenfield Drive apartment on
September 24th.

An autopsy suggested Beard died of
heart disease, but a full State Police
investigation has not been completed.

Civil rights leaders say they're
frustrated about the lack of progress
and question whether police and city
leaders are withholding important
information.

They plan to ask the federal
Department of Justice to step in.

struck head on by a minivan.

Police say the van crossed the
center line.

the car died yesterday.

Theresa Neil is still in critical

student accused of making a bomb and
planting it in a Blacksburg apartment
is headed to a grand jury.

21 year old Janaka Siriwardena
"Jon-a-ka Seer-war-deena" is facing
numerous charges, including making an
explosive device.

Investigators say he placed a
bomb and cocaine in the apartment of a
friend and then reported the friend to
police.

A judge certified the felony
charges and convicted Siriwardena
Seer-war-deena of misdemeanor filing a
false police report.

He was fined 100 dollars and
given a suspended jail sentence.

The defense plans to appeal the
conviction to circuit court.

receiver, Josh Morgan and defensive end
Chris Ellis apologized for the
altercation in court this morning.

It happened in September when a
crowd had gathered on Draper Road after
the bars closed. Police arrived and
saw Morgan punch the window of a
passing truck.

When Morgan was pepper sprayed
and arrested, Ellis incited an angry
crowd to yell at police.

Southern's plans to build a rail
center.

Norfolk Southern was planning to
build the center in the Elliston area.

But the railroad says it is also

study conducted by researchers at V-C-U
and the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign found it's also
increasing our dependency on foreign
oil.

Since 1960, Americans have gained
an average of 24 pounds... extra weight
that's causing us to consume an extra
938- million- gallons of fuel each
year.

The study based calculations on
cars and light trucks- like pick- ups
and SUV's and ruled out factors that
decrease fuel efficiency like poor

getting ready for the A-C-C Football
Championship Game down in Jacksonville.
The Hokies will be spectators this
season and can watch on as they have
played both Wake Forest and Georgia
Tech during the Regular Season. Tech

over the Demon Deacons. They were one
of the few who did so as Wake Set a
school record for wins in a season.
They would like to up that number to 11

World as a trainer is dragged
underwater by a Killer Whale.

Yesterday Officials say the whale grabbed
the trainer's foot, and pulled him
underwater twice.

At one point he was under for a
couple of minutes.

The whale eventually let him go
and he got away.

A park spokesman says the trainer

was able to calm the whale down because
of their close relationship.

And THAT played a major role in
the trainer's ability to swim out of
the pool.

The trainer was taken to the
hospital and is listed in good
condition.

annual Christmas Parade.

The Christmas spirit was definitely
in the air tonight.

Armed with umbrellas, onlookers
watched as holiday floats, several high
school marching bands and even speed
skaters zipped by.

In fact, there were nearly 80
entries at this year's event. The
parade is put on by the Vinton Chamber
of Commerce and is one of the first
parades in the valley to kick off the
holiday season.
