powder in a piece of mail put a Galax
post office on lock down last night.

happened.
He said a woman opened up what
she thought was junk mail and found the
powdery substance.
The post master was alerted and
the building went on lock down
immediately.
State Police responded and turned

positive for any poisons.

murder of a Roanoke woman.

VO-NAT In October, the body of 41 year
old Karen Bethany Elkins was found in
the Roanoke River by a passerby in
Wasena Park.
Yesterday, 29 year old Aaron
Paul Gray was arrested and charged with
murder.
Authorities are not releasing how
Elkins died.

Middle School will be hitting the books
again today, after a fire forced an
evacuation yesterday afternoon.

Crews responded to Hidden Valley
Middle School just before two o'clock
after smoke started to pour out of a
girls' bathroom.
An incident commander says while
the fire was confined to the bathroom,
smoke was a problem and large fans were
brought in to clear out the smell.
A school official says the fire
started after someone stuffed paper
into the toilet in a girls' bathroom
-and lit it.

Davidson's in Downtown Roanoke.

Eleven days after a fire at the
downtown store. Davidson's re-opened
yesterday with all new merchandise.
The store's owner and employees
have been scrambling to get new
sweaters, shirts, suits and more..
ordered as quickly as possible. Boxes
of new merchandise were still arriving
by Fed Ex when the doors opened for
business yesterday morning.
An electrical explosion in the
basement the Saturday before last
caused smoke damage and forced the
store to shut down.

County sheriff's deputy and his wife
died.

deputy Tim Jones died of multiple
gunshot wounds.
His wife, Pamela Jones,
died of a single gunshot wound.
Her injury appears to be self

Their bodies were found

Tuesday.
Officers went to the house
after deputy Jones didn't show up for
work.
