Police say back in September they

He was pepper sprayed and Ellis
then incited a crowd to yell at police

a man in the audience caught on tape
what should have been an amazing

show at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium ... a
trainer and a killer whale.

But what the crowd witnessed ... wasn't
in the program.

SOT (Sherri Justice, Witness)

"his foot was in his mouth and he would
not let go of his foot."

"i was scared. i had no idea it was
going to happen."

According to SeaWorld in san diego ...
the trainer was to go

underwater with kasatka .. then emerge
jumping from her nose.. but the

whale grabbed the trainer's foot and
held him underwater. They came up

for air once ... and kasatka dragged
him back down.

SOT (witness-no name)

"you could tell he was breathing and
everything, but they called for the

net, and you could tell it was a
situation they weren't completely in

control of."

(nats: ambulance)

Kasatka eventually released her grip
... and the trainer was able to

swim away.

SOT:Mike Scarpuzzi, SeaWorld

"I'm happy to report that the trainer
is doing very good and is in good

spirits. So, obviously we're very
happy to hear that good news." (runs

:07)

The 39-year-old trainer had 16 years of
experience ... 12 of them at the

Shamu Stadium.

Park officials say it was that
experience that helped him escape the

attack.

Even as he was gasping for air ... he
was rubbing the whale ... trying

to calm her down.
