still battling a forest fire this
morning.

Olivet...just west of Pulaski. The fire
is in a remote area making it difficult
to reach.

A fire official says about 45
acres have burned so far, and some of
that includes National Forest Land.

High winds last night made
it tough for firefighters. Crews worked

until midnight with plans of starting
their efforts again this morning.

housing authority has revealed "serious
violations," that officials say will
require the reimbursement of nearly two
million dollars.

and Urban Development conducted the
audit after the authority's new
executive director raised questions
about the agency's practices.

HUD found issues with 19 of the
21 contracts it reviewed.

forming a new caucus.

The group includes Delegate
Onzlee Ware, Mayor Nelson Harris, and
the three members of city council who
were elected as independents

The move comes two weeks after
the city's Democratic Committee asked
Harris and council member Bev
Fitzpatrick to resign from the party
for supporting the independent ticket.

Members of the group say they
want to energize Democrats, attract new
members and recruit candidates.

They'll outline their plans at a
news conference Monday.

Hundreds gathered for the annual tree
lighting in Wachovia Plaza.

This year's ceremony also featured
performances by a jazz band and an
appearance by old Saint Nick.

Afterwards, the festivities moved to
the city market for the annual Dickens
of Christmas.

Some of the favorites are back this
year, from chestnuts roasting on an
open fire to horse drawn carriage
rides.

Carolers also provided the
entertainment by dressing up in
Victorian Costumes and singing
Christmas songs.

Dickens of Christmas continues next
week with the annual Christmas parade.

Near blizzard conditions hit
Milwaukee yesterday with winds of up to
47 miles an hour and more than a foot
of snow. Traffic deaths in several
states have been blamed on the weather.

In Missouri, it was much the same. The
governor declared a state of emergency
after several parts of the state were
pummeled with snow, sleet, and freezing
rain. Butler, Missouri about 65 miles
south of Kansas City was one of the

A new 20-year study of more than
50-thousand men and women found the
long term effects of a substantial
reduction in smoking did not show any
benefits in comparison with persistent
heavy smoking.

Researchers say even cutting back by
half or more is not enough to impact
early death rates from cardiovascular
disease, cancers and other smoking

related illnesses.. to lower the risk
you have to quit.

Emerging research is leading scientists
to believe that swimming in pools may
increase a child's chances of
developing hay fever as an adult.

Researchers speculate that over an
extended period of time the
chlorination by-products in swimming
pools may damage the lining of the
lungs, allowing closer contact to
allergens and increasing the risk of
hay fever.

And the benefits of red wine keep
pouring in.

British scientists say the drink
contains a flavonoid that may help
protect blood vessels from damage.. but
not all wines have the same amount of
this compound.

Researchers found red wines produced in
southwest France and Sardinia have the
highest levels.

80 for motorists stuck on the icy
roadway.

Many were at a standstill for hours
after huge snow drifts caused accidents
Friday in LaSalle County, Illinois.

The Illinois National Guard
airlifted supplies and food into rest
areas for tired travelers.

The Illinois Department of
Natural Resources sent out snowmobiles
with donated goods from Walmart to
assist motorists.

Arkansas took some time out to play in
the snow after Thursday's winter storm
left them with a winter wonderland.

A wintry mix swept through the
area. There was enough wintry
precipitation to close schools across
the area Friday. Even though the storm
did not leave a ton of snow behind,
there was enough for kids to work up
some speed on their way down hills.

of numerous customers.

He will be sentenced in March.

Startz faces up to life in

everyday supplies that we all take for

SO IN A 30-DAY COMPETITION, EVERY
FRESHMAN CLASS HOMEROOM...STARTED
COLLECTING THOSE ESSENTIALS. AND ON
FRIDAY, WITH MORE THAN 1-THOUSAND
ITEMS...STUDENTS PACKED THEM UP TO SHIP
THEM OUT.

"While all these students' work is
actually volunteer, it does count
towards a smithfield high school
requirement that all students perform
at least 30 hours of community service
or have some type of service learning
as part of the schools diploma system."
"There's a strong connection to the
military across this town and across
the state and I supported everything
they wanted to do to fulfill this
project."

separated a set of conjoined twins.

students.

unveiled projects they had worked on
