have voted overwhelmingly to allow
their leaders to call a strike at any
time.

Today's vote comes two days after
their old contract expired, and the day
before talks with the company are
scheduled to resume.

Friday Steelworkers union officials say
96 percent of those voting today
approved the strike authorization.

It is important to note - this is
not a vote to go on strike, but it does
mean union leaders may now call for a
walkout at any time at the Covington
plant.

been informational as talks continue.
Union members say health care coverage
is the biggest issue standing in the
way of a new contract agreement.

The union says it represents 966
MeadWestvaco workers.

December 1978 Anyone living in Covington in
19-78 probably remembers the last time
there was a strike at the mill.

It lasted 80 days.

At the time, the company was
simply "Westvaco".

MeadWestvaco says this time
around, it has a plan in place to
continue operating should a strike
occur.

Community leaders say the impact
of another long strike to the region
could range from substantial to
devastating.

MeadWestvaco is one of the

largest employers in the Alleghany
Highlands.

the loss off a husband, his wife and
his daughter, victims of a
double-murder suicide.

The death toll rose to three
today when the daughter died in a North
Carolina hospital.

NO SUPER morning on Remus Street in the Dyer's
store area of Henry County.

Sheriff's deputies found the
victims after a family member alerted
them.

Police say 90 year-old Howard
McClendon shot his 85-year old wife

Devra Murrell before killing himself.

She had just seen her family the
day before her 90-year old uncle Howard
fatally shot his wife, daughter and
then himself.

in good spirits

during her last visit.

In fact, she says he was excited
because his wife of more than 50 years
had just returned home this past week
after spending about 1 month
recuperating in a nursing home.

But with such a drastic turn of

could have driven McClendon to commit
these acts.

rule on a clemency request this week
for a death row inmate who murdered
three people in Danville.

File Tape Percy Walton is scheduled to die :03 this coming Friday for killing three of
his neighbors back in 19-97.

But lawyers say he has no idea
about his fate because he suffers from
schizophrenia.

Walton came within two hours of
execution this June when the governor
delayed his execution for six months to
allow for new evaluations of Walton's
mental condition and competence.

The Supreme Court ruled it is
unconstitutional to execute people who
are insane.

to Roanoke Police today and confessed
to hitting two other teens last night
near the Valley View Mall.

Last Night The hit-and-run happened by the
Chick-Fil-A restaurant.

Police say 19-year-old James
Roseberry of Roanoke was trying to go
straight on Valley View Boulevard.

That's when he alledgely plowed
into a 13 and a 14-year-old who were
trying to cross the street.

Both teens were taken to the
hospital but authorities say they're
now at home.

Roseberry faces two counts of hit
and run.

showing no mercy - devouring five homes
in its path.

Ventura County near L-A.

On top of the five homes that
were destroyed, five others were
damaged.

In all, about 41 hundred acres
have burned.

Voluntary evacuations have been

thing under control.

This is one of three fires
burning in the area.

stop ended with a Virginia teen jumping

67 feet to his death.

A state trooper stopped the boy
for speeding but then cited him for
drinking and driving AND not carrying a
license.

The officer cuffed the
16-year-old and put him in the police
car, then went over to question the
passenger - also a teenager.

from the police car and jumped off the
bridge into the Occoquan River.

Recovery crews found the body
five hours later.

Another viewer thinks News-7's decision
to air the story was out of tune with
good taste.

USC is back in the Rose
Bowl--the grandaddy of them all against
Michigan. The January 1st matchup is a
rematch of the 2004 Rose won by the
Trojans.

Wake Forest is the ACC
Champ and the Deacs will tangle with
top dog in the Big East, Louisville on
January 2nd. And finally, Notre Dame
is an at-large selection. The Irish
will get 10 and 2 LSU in the Sugar Bowl

against Virginia. Tech hasn't played
the Bulldogs in more than 70 years.
The Hokies first bowl win came in the

Atlanta Falcons.

Jason Campbell then went to the

But Mike Vick and the Falcons
regrouped. Vick threw for 122 yards
