(END SOT) Emerging research seems to indicate
that problem gamblers may have to deal
with more than just money-related
issues.
(vo)
A new study shows those that can't
control their gambling may have higher
odds of physical health problems.
Researchers found that among more than
43-thousand Americans in a national
survey, problem gamblers had elevated
rates of liver disease, high blood
pressure, high heart rate and chest
pain caused by blockages in the heart
arteries.
(wipevo)
People who flavor their diets with
plenty of onions and garlic might have
lower odds of several types of cancer.
In an analysis of eight studies from
Italy and Switzerland, researchers
found that older adults with the
highest onion and garlic intake had the
lowest risk of a number of cancers,
including colon, ovarian and throat
cancers.
(wipevo)
Psychologists studying eating disorders
have found that living in big cities
raises the risk of suffering from
bulimia.
They found women in cities were five
times more likely to have the
binge-and-purge illness than those who
live in small towns.
The same study showed no difference in
anorexia rates.

Friday Steelworkers union officials say
96 percent of those voting yesterday
approved the strike authorization.
It is important to note - this is
not a vote to go on strike, but it does
mean union leaders may now call for a
walkout at any time at the Covington
plant.

So far, the only pickets have
been informational as talks continue.
Union members say health care coverage
is the biggest issue standing in the
way of a new contract agreement.
The union says it represents 966
MeadWestvaco workers.

December 1978 Anyone living in Covington in
19-78 probably remembers the last time
there was a strike at the mill.
It lasted 80 days.
At the time, the company was
simply "Westvaco".
MeadWestvaco says this time
around, it has a plan in place to
continue operating should a strike
occur.
Community leaders say the impact
of another long strike to the region
could range from substantial to
devastating.
MeadWestvaco is one of the
largest employers in the Alleghany
Highlands.
