five-year-old girl accidentally shot
her mother in the chest with a rifle
inside their home.

It happened yesterday along
Woodlawn Avenue outside Martinsville.

Investigators say another
relative laid the recently-purchased
rifle down inside the home, the child
picked it up, and the rifle discharged.

Orange Avenue was held up and the owner
shot to death... another man was
robbed by two people who matched the
description of the Z-Mart killers.

November 7 A Roanoke Grand Jury yesterday
indicted Reginald Killingsworth and
Mendy Lavern Phelps for robbery and use
of a firearm... in that earlier stick
up.

They were already suspects in the
murder of Z-mart store owner Zaid
Almajali (ZAYD AHL- muh- JAH- lee).

The victim of the earlier robbery
came forward after hearing accounts of
the Z-Mart incident.

Police say they found evidence
from both hold-ups in the car Phelps
was driving.

its no wonder its the busiest road in
Botetourt County outside of Interstate
81.

And if VDOT has its way- 460

could soon become one of the fastest.

V-DOT is looking into raising the
speed limit on route 460 from 55 miles
an hour to 60.

Two places on the Botetourt
County stretch of roadway would stay 55
- the half-mile portion near Laymantown
Road and the area near Boxley Quarry.

The speed limit could increase
early next year.

Lee Plaza yesterday afternoon to
announce the Roanoke Democratic Caucus.

Last month, the Roanoke
Democratic Committee asked Mayor Nelson
Harris and council member Bev
Fitzpatrick to resign from the party
because of their support for the
Independent ticket in the recent
council election.

Members of the new organization
say they hope to energize Democrats
with a positive message, bring more
people into the party, and recruit
candidates for public office.

investigating two recent break-ins at
Hidden Valley High School grounds.

On October 14th, someone broke into
the school, smashed several office
windows, stole eight laptops, and
damaged two others.

Then two weeks later on the 28th,
several juveniles were caught breaking
into a concession stand on school
grounds.

When police showed up, a foot chase
ensued and three juveniles were
arrested.

It's unclear whether the two
incidents are related.

Association.

Teachers are still angry they only
found out about the extended day
several weeks before school started.

They're even more upset they're NOT

off attempts to allow hunting on
Sundays.

after sunset.
