racketeering probe of the County
Sheriff's department, the county
prosecutor has decided he cannot pursue
charges against more than two dozen
different suspects.

Bushnell says the list of cases
includes 16 pending felony drug
charges.
Bushnell says he "determined that these
charges could not be effectively
prosecuted without the testimony" of
deputies now under indictment.
A dozen sheriff's department
officials were indicted by a federal
Grand jury in October- -mostly for
stealing drugs from the property room
and re-selling them on the street.

County were busted on drug charges
today --with a special Christmas card
from the Sheriff.
The kind that lists their Miranda
rights.

Arrest teams began rounding up the
suspected dealers early this morning.
They included a father and son from
one family and two brothers from
another.
Authorities say the suspects have
been dealing substantial amounts of
drugs -- mostly crack cocaine -- for
some time.

seized during the arrests.

the targets of lawsuits by New York
City.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg says
Franklin Rod and Gun Shop in Rocky
Mount and Town & Country Pawn Shop in
Roanoke as well as shops in four other
states are responsible for many of the
illegal weapons that make their way to
the Big Apple.
New York made a similar complaint
against other shops last spring.

GRAPHIC=FIRE INVESTIGATION A man was found dead in a fire
in Danville early this morning, though
it may not have been the fire that
killed him.

VO-NAT Firefighters were called to 841 Main
Street just after 2:30 a-m.
They found heavy smoke pouring out
of the home that also served as a law
office.
68-year-old Gary Bengston was
found in the basement.
He was unresponsive and
pronounced dead at the scene.
Police and the fire marshal's
office are now running a joint
investigation.
Police say Bengston's injuries are
not consistent with a fire.
His body has been take to Roanoke
for an autopsy.

after their three-year old wondered
from home yesterday.

to meet his father but instead walked
off into the woods with his dog.
It took four hours for search
crews to find the child and dog about
nine last night.
The boy was unharmed and in good
condition in the Camp Mitchell area of
Craig County.

enlisted in the Army, Paul Suter had
been in Hawaii with his field artillery
unit for a year when the Japanese
attacked.

STARTED, AND WE LOOKED OUT AND THIS
PLANE CAME UP AND IT REALLY SHOT THE
PLACE UP A BIT AND HAD BIG RED BALLS
UNDERNEATH IT. HOLY MOSES LOOK AT THIS.

OQ=Holy Moses look at this. Transferrred to other units in
the months after the attack, Suter
would land on Utah Beach on June 7th,
1944... The fighting that followed
would carry him through the Battle of
the Bulge.
Protected by a St. Christopher's
Medal given to him by a Belgian School
girl, he says he was prepared in part
by his presence at Pearl Harbor.

honored this month.

golf magazine, has named the Pete Dye
River Course of Virginia Tech among the
"Best New Remodel" golf courses for
2006. The River Course was ranked
fourth among the 170 courses
considered, and was the only public,
non resort course in the top five. It
was also one of three Virginia courses
ranked in the top five.
The top five courses will be
featured in the January 2007 edition of
the magazine, which will be available
on newsstands Tuesday, Dec. 12.
