Christmas parade in Pulaski was the
cold weather.

Nearly sixty groups marched
through the streets of downtown Pulaski
for the 31st annual Christmas parade.
Last year, the white supremacist
group drove a vehicle plastered with
Klan and Confederate bumper stickers.
Many were offended prompting
organizers to make a number of changes
to this year's parade.
There were no major incidents at
last night's parade.
In fact, most people talked about
the bitter cold temperatures and the
fact the marquee at the theater in
downtown was lit for the first in time
in years.

GRAPHIC=DRUG BUST More than a dozen arrests have
been made in Bedford County after a
round-up of suspected drug dealers.

A special grand jury recently
handed down 28 indictments against 17
people on charges ranging from drug
distribution to assaulting a police
officer.
Authorities say they're trying to
disrupt the county's drug trade by
taking dealers off the street and
getting information from them that
leads to more arrests.
Yesterday, police also seized
more than three thousand dollars in
cash, several guns and what appears to
be marijuana.
Every suspect got a Christmas
card from Sheriff Mike Brown that
listed their Miranda rights.

Charlotte Sheppard who live right
across the street from it.
The Sheppards say the junk has
now affected the resale value of their
home.
But the property owner, Charlie
Turman believes he should be able to do
what he wants with his land.
A spokesperson for V-Dot says the
property did not meet state standards
to be considered a junkyard.
V-Dot., the D-M-V and Carroll
County leaders will all meet tomorrow
to discuss the situation.

a comeback.

There are at least 10 major,
multi-million dollar construction
projects underway or about to start in
town.
Three of the projects will bring
new hotels to the area and the rest
will bring new shopping opportunities
and places to live.
Kent Square was built over a year
ago and will be FULL in the fall after
an Awful Arthur's restaurant moves in.
A 15 million dollar project at
University Mall, that includes a three
story building and parking garage is
also, nearly done.

Last night, a meeting to discuss
how to improve the water quality of the
Looney Creek watershed was held at
Buchanan Elementary School.
According to the Department of
Environmental Quality - the bacteria
levels are too high.
Officials say the solutions are
simple - residents need to keep
livestock out of the water, establish a
buffer zone around the area and improve
any faulty septic systems.

GRAPHIC=FIRE INVESTIGATION The death of a Danville man whose
body was found in a house fire is
arousing suspicion.

Firefighters were called to 841
Main Street just after 2:30 yesterday
morning.
They found heavy smoke pouring
out of the home that also served as a
law office.
68-year-old Gary Bengston
was found in the basement.
He was unresponsive and
pronounced dead at the scene.
Police and the fire
marshal's office are now running a
joint investigation.
Police say Bengston's injuries
are not consistent with a fire.
His body has been take to
Roanoke for an autopsy.

happened to the three-year-old boy who
was missing for several hours Wednesday
in Craig County.

Apparently, the boy was allowed
to go outside to meet his father but
instead wandered into the woods with
his dog.
Search crews found the child and
dog about 9 o'clock Wednesday night,
four hours after he wandered away.
*CG locator Lynchburg Law enforcement used a Forward
Infrared Camera to locate the child.
The device detects heat sources
and it zeroed in on the boy about three
quarters of a mile from his home, in
the Camp Mitchell area of Craig County.

department has its OWN problems, and
now dozens of drug suspects may catch a
break.
In light of a FEDERAL
racketeering probe of the Sheriff's
department, the prosecutor has decided
he cannot pursue charges against more
than two dozen different suspects.
The Commonwealth's Attorney says
he's "determined that these charges
could not be effectively prosecuted
without the testimony" of deputies now
under indictment.
A dozen sheriff's department
officials were indicted by a federal
Grand jury in October- -mostly for
stealing drugs from the property room
and re-selling them on the street.
