MIKE ON CAM MIKE ON CAM

GRAPHIC=FFE Welcome everybody to Friday

Football Extra. We put the wraps on
our 23rd season tonight, with the state
final preview edition. And what a
season it's been. Tomorrow, 6 state
champs will be crowned across the
state.

In the next half hour Travis
Wells and Grant Kittelson will stop by
to help assess the chances our local
teams have when it comes to bring home
the gold.

GRAPHIC=AMHERST/LOUISA We start this evening in the

Double-A Division Four ranks, where
Amherst and Louisa will play for all
the marbles.

Travis Wells gets us set for
tomorrow's 4pm kickoff at Liberty
University's Williams Stadium in what
amounts to a home game for the Lancers
who had to hit the road the last two
weeks of the playoffs.

OQ=Friday Football Extra." < (END SOT) appearance in a state title game and

its first since losing to Hampton in
the Triple A Division 5 contest in
1998. Louisa is in the big show for
the first time, which is big news in
Mineral. In fact, the Lions 3 playoff
wins are the first in the 60 year
history of the school's football
program. The history aside, the two
teams have similar approaches and the
same goal.

SCOTT ABELL/AMHERST HEAD COACH:

Lions Coach Mark Fischer brought the
single wing offense with him when he
got the job in 2001, and his team has
rolled to a 12 and oh mark, winning the

Jefferson District for the third
straight year, and its first Region Two
Championship.

ABELL:

The Louisa defense, giving up just 11
points per game, will be severely
tested as the Lancers have been an
offensive juggernaut, scoring 564
points in 12 games, while the Amherst
'd' has been tough in its own right,
allowing but 99 points all season.

ABELL:

Coach Abell is a 1988 grad of Western
Albemarle High School in Crozet, a
Jefferson District rival of Louisa, and
a team that the Lions beat 13 to 10 in
their season opener. Travis Wells,

Tilt against Richlands on Saturday.

The Win streak started after a 2 and 4

much of the focus, and deservedly so,
especially when Quarterback Marcus Mayo
returned from an injury. But the
Defense has done it's part as well.

Rockbridge's Shutout State Semi win

on the road this season. And while the
game will be played at a neutral site.

OQ=..EXCEPT FAILURE, BASICALLY." << The talk all week in Gile County
(END SOT) leading up to the State semi-final

matchup with Powell Valley went
something like this - Yeah Region D is
down this year, but Powell Valley is
still Powell Valley.

So much for the talk.

Tanner and the Gile Spartans
turned what is usually a nailbiter into

a complete blowout - winning 49-to-8 as
Tanner rushed for 166 yards and scored
five touchdowns.

BITES

Tanner inherited the
all-important halfback position in the
singel wing when another player of the
week Ricky Cook graduated. Tanner
embraced the role and the pressure that
goes along with it by accounting for 42
touchdowns and nearly 23 hundred yards
of offense in 13 games.

BITES

At six-three it's not a surprise
that Tanner is a huge basketball fan of
not only the game - but his Airness -
who also handled pressure pretty well.
