Firefighters were called to 841
Main Street just after 2:30 yesterday
morning.

They found heavy smoke pouring
out of the home that also served as a
law office.

68-year-old Gary Bengston
was found in the basement.

He was unresponsive and
pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and the fire
marshal's office are now running a
joint investigation.

Police say Bengston's injuries
are not consistent with a fire.

His body's been taken to
Roanoke for an autopsy.

charges in Henry County may be off the

Because of a FEDERAL racketeering

prosecutor has decided he cannot pursue
charges against more than two dozen

The Commonwealth's Attorney says
he's "determined that these charges
could not be effectively prosecuted
without the testimony" of deputies now
under indictment.

A dozen sheriff's department
officials were indicted by a federal
Grand jury in October- -mostly for
stealing drugs from the property room,
and re-selling them on the street.

Now here's a look at today's top local
stories.

V-DOT says drivers should be alert to
slick spots.

Some icy patches have been reported on
Interstate 77 in Wythe and Bland
counties. Also the majority of primary
and secondary roads in southwestern
Virginia have scattered snow and ice
patches.

VO-NAT VO-NAT

ENG#1 Seventeen people around Bedford County

were busted on drug charges. Arrest
teams began rounding up the suspected
dealers early yesterday morning.
Authorities say the suspects have been
dealing substantial amounts of drugs --
mostly crack cocaine -- for some time.

ENG#2

And, the Ku Klux Klan stayed away from
this year's Christmas parade in
Pulaski. Last year, it was a
completely different situation when the
white supremacist group drove a vehicle
plastered with Klan and Confederate
bumper stickers. This year's event was
problem free. Most people talked
about the bitter cold temperatures.
