Three years...ten million dollars...one
conclusion:
(1223) SOT: LORD STEVENS/CHIEF
INVESTIGATOR
THERE WAS NO CONSPIRACY TO MURDER ANY
OF THE OCCUPANTS OF THAT CAR. THIS
WAS A TRAGIC ACCIDENT.
The investigation aims to bury a decade
of conspiracy theories that
Princess Diana and boyfriend Dodi al
Fayed were murdered by the Royal
Family because their relationship was
an embarrassment.
And of the widespread speculation Diana
was carrying Dodi's baby when
she died?
SOT: LORD STEVENS,
WE ARE CERTAIN THE PRINCESS WAS NOT
PREGNANT AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH.
The inquiry, led by former police chief
Lord Stevens, largely reinforced
French findings in the 1997 car crash
in a Paris underpass: that Henri
Paul was TWICE over the drunk driving
limit when he smashed into a
tunnel trying to outrun paparazzi.
Neither the Princess nor Dodi were
wearing seatbelts.
ON CAMERA BRIDGE: CHARLIE
D'AGATA/BUCKINGHAM PALACE
LORD STEVENS ADMITTED THERE WERE
SEVERAL THINGS IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO
KNOW FOR SURE -- LIKE WHETHER DODI HAD
PLANNED ON ASKING DIANA TO MARRY
HIM THAT VERY NIGHT, BUT HE SAYS SHE
WAS DEFINITELY ..NOT.. ENGAGED, AND
PROBABLY NOT ABOUT TO BE ENGAGED, WHEN
SHE DIED.
SOT: LORD STEVENS
PRINCE WILLIAM HAS CONFIRMED TO ME THAT
HIS MOTHER HAD NOT GIVEN HIM THE
SLIGHTEST INDICATION OF SUCH PLANS FOR
THE FUTURE.
Even before the report was made public,
Dodi's father, Mohammed al Fayed
slammed its findings.
SOUNDBITE: Mohammed al Fayed, father of
Dodi Fayed:
"BALONEY, IT'S ALL MADE UP AS A COVER
UP, A HUNDRED PERCENT.
Princes William and Harry have said
they hope to FINALLY bring an end to
speculation of what happened that night
in Paris when they lost their
mother, and the world lost a princess.
