Educaiton 7 animation since the school day was extended in
Roanoke City, and administrators are
calling it a success.

They point to Morningside Elementary
where they say preliminary results show
some improvements.
There, the school day was extended by
25 minutes and teachers are using that
extra time for what is called Star
Time.
That involves putting students into
smaller groups at the end of the day to
give them extra help in passing the
S-O-L's.

County.

According to construction and
county officials- the 20-million dollar
Public Safety building is more than
halfway finished.
The current jail was built to
house 38-prisoners, but at times it has
housed as many as 100.
When the state of the art
facility opens it will initially house
more than 120 prisoners and have room
to grow.
The jail is expected to be
finished next summer.
Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle says with
the larger facility-he'll get a larger
staff.
He's hiring 31-new positions. If
you're interested you can call the
Botetourt County Sheriff's Office.

fitness facilities.
Model homes will be completed in
the spring.
Woodsedge is part of Warm Hearth
Village, a 220-acre retirement
community.

It's trying to help Santa find
your house while making sure the
families of two fallen heros have a
good holiday.

The United Way of Montgomery,
Radford and Floyd is selling Santa
Beacons.
They are little gold tins filled
with goodies and a flashing light to
guide Santa to your house on Christmas
Eve.
The beacons are two dollars, but
any money you donate above that will be
split between the United Way and the
Derrick McFarland and Eric Sutphin
Memorial funds.

hand out angel tree gifts.

agency is using drive-thru service.
More than three hundred families
in need got their clothes, toys and
food for the holidays by pulling up to
the church.
The line was so long yesterday
morning is stretched a half a mile down
Roanoke Street.
Many recipients told us they like
the new service because it got them on
their way faster.
The agency plans to do it again
next Christmas.

questions.. referring to all the
questions those doctors have about
Carilion's plan to become a clinic.

affected.

that City Council would allow him to
resume work on his roof....

But no such luck!
Aubrey Hicks lives in Old Southwest...
a historic district -- and that means
there are certain rules about what you
can do to your house.
Hicks violated a rule when he opted
for a shingle roof instead of replacing
his tin roof with metal.
And he did it without the appropriate
permits.
Hicks admits he made a mistake, but
points out the tin roof would have cost
15-thousand dollars more. He says he
simply can't afford it.
Last night, City Council voted to
uphold the A-R-B's decision not to
allow the shingle roof.

Next fall, the federal government
will be working along the Pigg River -
removing a dam that has put logperch
fish on the endangered list.
At least one county department
sees this as a prime opportunity to go
in and reconstruct the outdoor site
altogether and turn in to a full- blown
water park.
The Commerce and Leisure
department will present a detailed
outline at today's Board of Supervisors
meeting.
Total cost, including the dam
removal, is estimated to be about four
million dollars.
