Police want motorists to know
they'll be keeping a close eye on them
and arresting drunk drivers.

Extra patrol cruisers and
checkpoints will be used to keep the
roadways safe.

If you plan to drink on New
Year's Eve, plan to have a designated
driver.

That's the message law
enforcement wants the public to hear.

Another message motorists need to
know is that "buzzed driving" is drunk
driving.

The holiday started on Tuesday
and lasts until January first. It
honors African culture and traditions
-- including unity and faith.

Here in Roanoke, the local
chapter of Blacks in Government
sponsored an event at the Harrison
Museum of African American Art.

Kwanzaa is a Swahili word that
means "first" signifying the first
fruits of the annual harvest.

The holiday was created by a
California State University professor

in 19-66

Before you kick yours to the
curb, there are some alternatives
instead of tossing your tree into the
landfill.

You can put in your backyard for
the birds or chop it up for mulch.

Another suggestion, if you live
near a pond, you can also sink your
tree so it can be used as habitat for
fish.

To find out if more alternative
plans, contact your town, city or
