OQ=Natasha Ryan, News-7 << 2006 began and ended with news
(END SOT) about Marcus Vick. The Virginia Tech
Quarterback's troubles began January
Second when he stomped on an opposing
player in the Gator Bowl. Within days,
Vick and his string of on and off the
field trouble were gone from the team,
but not from the headlines. In
December he became the target of a
lawsuit alleging a sexual relationship
with a teenage girl. The case is still
unresolved. Vick now plays for the
NFL's Miami Dolphins.
At number six is Jim Webb's
Senate victory and the collapse of
incumbent George Allen's campaign. At
the end of June, it looked like the
Republican would cruise to re-election.
Then came this:
SOT FULL SOT FULL

SHIRT... MACACA OR WHATEVER HIS NAME
IS.
RUN04 (END SOT)
OQ=whatever his name is.
Allen apologized for the remark,
but his 19 point lead evaporated.
Other allegations of racist comments,
combined with growing discontent over
the Iraq War, put Webb on top by just a
93-hundred votes. The Democrat will be
sworn in as a United States Senator
January Fourth. Allen says he'll
remain active in politics.
The deadly carbon monoxide buildup
at Roanoke College is number 5. On the
morning of July 14th, one person died
and more than a hundred were sent to
area hospitals. Investigators later
blamed a malfunctioning gas water
heater. The college has since
installed carbon monoxide detectors and
tried to improve its inspection and
evacuation procedures.
Two stories tied for third and
they're both scandals. In November,
Henry County was rocked by the federal
indictment of sheriff Frank Cassell, a
dozen deputies and several other
people. Cassell retired from office.
A few defendants have plead guilty but
Cassell and most of the others have not
yet been tried.
Also at number three is the
year-long trouble involving two WSLS
meteorologists. It began in February
with the near-fatal drug overdose of
Marc Lamarre. Lamarre was hospitalized
and fired from his job. A federal
investigation revealed Lamarre and
fellow meteorologist Jamey Singleton
were both buying heroin, though neither
was ever criminally charged. Singleton
kept his job, until a photo began
circulating by email and the internet.

Singleton was fired, WSLS
said, for violating the morals clause
of his contract.
There's also a tie for the top
slot:
The long history and long
fight over Victory Stadium came to an
end in 2006. The future of the Roanoke
landmark was in limbo until the May
election put three anti-stadium,
independent candidates on council.
Later that month city council voted to
demolish the structure. And on June
26, the wrecking ball swung into
action.

Not even one last visit by the
Roanoke River could slow down the
demolition. Temporary soccer fields
will take the stadium's place until a
more permanent solution is found.
Also at the top of our list:
the two-day manhunt for William Morva.
On the morning of August 20th, Morva,
an inmate at the Montgomery County
jail, overpowered a deputy, killed a
security officer at Montgomery Regional
Hospital and took off. Early the next
morning he authorities say he killed a
sheriff's deputy on the Huckleberry
Trail near Virginia Tech. Classes were
canceled, the school locked down for
hours until finally on the afternoon of
August 21, came this announcement:
