A big change is coming in guidelines
for testing pregnant women for Down
syndrome.
(GFX)
For years doctors have been
recommending that only mothers-to-be
over 35 be tested for the birth defect.
But starting this week, they'll urge
that all pregnant women be screened,
because of the availability of less
invasive tests.
(wipevo)
A new study finds pregnant women who
eat fish more than three times a week
could be putting their baby at risk
because of higher mercury levels in
their blood.
Mercury exposure is especially risky
for fetuses when their internal organs
are developing, and can result in
neuronal, kidney and brain damage, and
stunt growth.
The FDA advises pregnant women to avoid
eating fish with high mercury levels
such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel
and tilefish.
(wipevo)
It looks like kids are helping adults
pack on the pounds.
For years, experts have known that
parents' eating habits influence
children's food intake.
Now a new study finds parents with
children 17 and under living at home
eat about five more grams of fat each
day than adult in childless households.
Researchers founds adults with kids in
the house were more likely to eat such
high-fat foods as cheese, ice cream and
pizza.
