A big change is coming in guidelines
for testing pregnant women for Down
syndrome.

(GFX)

For years doctors have been
recommending that only mothers-to-be
over 35 be tested for the birth defect.

But starting this week, they'll urge
that all pregnant women be screened,
because of the availability of less
invasive tests.

(wipevo)

A new study finds pregnant women who
eat fish more than three times a week
could be putting their baby at risk
because of higher mercury levels in
their blood.

Mercury exposure is especially risky
for fetuses when their internal organs
are developing, and can result in
neuronal, kidney and brain damage, and
stunt growth.

The FDA advises pregnant women to avoid
eating fish with high mercury levels
such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel
and tilefish.

(wipevo)

It looks like kids are helping adults
pack on the pounds.

For years, experts have known that
parents' eating habits influence
children's food intake.

Now a new study finds parents with
children 17 and under living at home
eat about five more grams of fat each
day than adult in childless households.

Researchers founds adults with kids in
the house were more likely to eat such
high-fat foods as cheese, ice cream and
pizza.

(oncam)

Those are some of the day s top health
stories.

99 YEARS AGO TODAY, THE BALL OF LIGHT
MADE IT'S MAIDEN VOYAGE..BEGINNING ITS
DESCENT IN 1907 AND LANDING IN 1908.

IT WAS JUST A BALL MADE OF IRON AND
WOOD, COVERED WITH 25-WATT LIGHT BULBS,
MOVING DOWN A FLAGPOLE - BUT THAT NIGHT

IT BECAME THE SYMBOL OF NEW YEAR'S EVE.

(SOT - Tama Starr/ ArtKraft Strauss

It was an instant hit from the very
first time it was done. Everybody just
loved it. It seemed to speak to

(01:08:04 BJ:) That's right! It's the
power of the ball.

there to have that pressure on you?

(TS-01:33:47 )It seemed that minute
when the ball was coming down was the
longest minute in the world// (1:32:40)
Because of weather conditions the ball
can speed up or slow down. We had
markers on the cable to show that we
were on schedule. ( My job was to say
speed up or slow down so that ball
reached the bottom at exactly, exactly
midnight.)

(01:34:19 Bianca): If for some reason
the ball would not lower, do you think
the New Year would come?

(01:34:25 TS:) We think that if there
were no ball in TS, that time would
just stop. The last thing you would see
would be the person you are about to

Extra law enforcement are on the
look-out this New Year's Day hoping to
prevent the roads from becoming a
deadly place.

Last year, 13 people died on
Virginia's roads during New Year's
weekend, almost twice as many in 2004.

The weather didn't put a damper
on folks in Vinton celebrating the
arrival of 2007 at Enchanted Eve.

The theme for the bash was a
cruise ship.

Many took their chances at slot

machines hoping to cash in big for the
New Year.

Others sat down for poker...Texas
hold'em style.

Last Week Mill Mountain Zoo is getting a
facelift and it won't have to shell out
a penny.

The facelift was made possible
thanks to Parker Vacik (Va-sick), a
Cave Spring High School student.

He decided to take on the zoo as
his Eagle Scout Project.

Parker and several other boyscout
budies spent part of the week
completely remodeling the Bald Eagle
Exhibit.
