501 in Riverdale spent yesterday
packing up valuables and moving them to
higher ground.
Others weren't concerned that the
rising water would do much damage to
their buildings or their inventory and
they stayed put.
The river was expected to crest
today and a flood warning is in effect

The intersection of Routes 58 and

time today for their actions that left
a local lumber company bankrupt,
leaving hundreds of people without
jobs.

former Lynchburg council member Larry
Carey left court Wednesday with a
federal prison term hanging over his
head.
A jury last spring convicted Carey
and his colleague John Jackson of fraud
and embezzlement.
Prosecutors say the pair raided
Burruss's pension and health insurance
funds, and faked asset reports to make
the company more attractive to
investors.
Instead, Burruss went bankrupt in
2000, leaving 700 people without a job,
and many of them without a pension or
insurance.
But Jackson's attorney says it was
questionable management and there never
was any intent to defraud.

VO-NAT Roy Stevens died Monday.
The Bedford native was among the
last veterans of the World War Two
invasion on the beaches of Normandy,
France on D-Day.
His twin brother, Ray, died in
the invasion.
Every year on June 6th, Roy
Stevens was at the D-Day Memorial that
he helped create in his hometown.
He was happy to see youngsters
taking an interest in it.

just the opposite.

Saban won a national championship at
LSU, but was just 15-and-17 with the
Dolphins. This just completed season
was his first losing season in 13 years
as a head coach at any level.
As for the money - he was making
$4 and a half million a season and
living on the beach.
In Tuscaloosa, he won't get a
beach, but he will make a lot of cash -
$32 million over 8 years - and it's all
guaranteed. He'll be formally
introduced tomorrow morning.

from William Fleming inked scholarship
papers today.
Dwayne Priest and E.J. Webb spent
the first semester of this year at Fork
Union Military.
And their hard work paid off as
they received a scholarships to furhter
their education and playing days.
Priest is headed to Eastern
Michigan while Webb is going to Georgia
Southern.
