longtime local business in Hillsville.

It started around midnight
Wednesday around a lotto machine at
T-N-T Grocery.

The business, which also doubles
as a gas station and sandwich shop, has
been a fixture on Route 52 for more
than 25 years.

Firefighters were able to break
through the front door and pull the
machine out of the store, but the
building had heavy smoke damage.

The owner says he does plan to
bring the business back as soon as
possible.

for failing to bury eleven of her dead
pets.

Last Month News 7 first showed you the scene
there last month. Now animal control
officials also brought charges against

Nancy Felter for failing to provide
adequate shelter for seven animals.

That and the "failure to bury"
charges carry only a fine.

But one additional charge could
land Felter in jail for a year.

That involves the case of the
Schnauzer with a broken leg.

Felter is charged with "ill
treatment" or depriving the dog
emergency veterinary care, one of 19
separate charges returned by the grand
jury yesterday.

be on their way to prison for a scheme
that forced a local lumber company into
bankruptcy.

59-year-old Larry Carey and
65-year-old John Jackson were convicted

last year of fraud and embezzlement.

Prosecutors say the pair raided
the pension and health insurance funds
of the former Burruss Lumber Company,
and over-stated the company's assets to
secure millions in investments.

A judge yesterday gave Carey a
7-year, 3-month prison term .. Jackson
got 9 years.

Both will likely appeal.

new medical school.

announced yesterday they are joining
forces to open a small medical school
that will accept about 40 students in
each class.

The school will focus on training
research physicians.

Carilion hopes the med school
will prevent an anticipated physician
shortage in our area.

Governor Tim Kaine came to

impact healthcare and the economy.

Instead they're required to go
through a distributor, which is too
expensive for many small producers.

The law was changed to conform
with a federal court that ruled

been forced to depend on sales at
festivals and home retail shops.
