crash in Roanoke last night on Peter's
Creek Road..

It happened shortly after 9 o'
clock.
Police say a man and woman were
coming out of the parking lot of
Parker's Seafood in a Honda C-R-V when
they were hit by a G-M-C Yukon.
The couple was pronounced dead at
the scene, but the driver of the Yukon
did not need medical attention.
No charges have been filed, but
the accident is still under
investigation.

area man with a deadly New Year's Day
shooting at a Henry County motel.

Monday The sheriff's office says the
shootings were the result of an
attempted drug deal gone bad.
21-year-old Blake James Short
was arrested in the 200 block of Parker
Road yesterday without incident.
He is charged with murdering John
Finney of Collinsville and with the
malicious wounding of Finney's wife
Denise.
Both were shot in the Dutch Inn
Motel parking lot.
Short is also charged with
Attempted Robbery and faces four
charges of Use of Firearm in commission
of a felony

you recognize the woman in a bank
surveillance photo.

earlier when a wallet was taken from a
woman's purse at a nail salon.
Police say this woman may have
driven the mini-van seen in the

Newport News sailor accused of
propositioning a 10- year- old Vinton
girl.

Few-jit entered no contest pleas to
charges of soliciting sex through a
communications device, as well as
taking indecent liberties with a child.
That was in Roanoke County
Circuit court yesterday- but, the case
was continued until mid-March because
of similar charges in federal court.

Fugit Few-jit met the girl who was
*then* just 10-years-old in a web
chatroom, and pretended to be a
10-year-old girl himself.
He got her number and then
called, posing as the online friend's
father.
That's when police say he
propositioned her.

Roanoke lately.
The landscape is quickly changing
as the new art museum takes shape.

The building is being constructed
in elements and the one that's most
noticeable so far faces Williamson
Road.
In the next two months, we're
told the structural steel beams should
all be in place and by the end of the
year the exterior of the building
should be completed.
The project has had plenty of
critics but project organizers hope
that criticism will subside now that
the building is taking shape.

He's been publishing a small
magazine in Giles County for four years
and decided it was high time the N-R-V

GRAPHIC=Kaine It may soon get more expensive to
buy and own a car in Virginia.
Governor Tim Kaine wants to
increase vehicle registration fees and
sales taxes on new cars to pay for
transportation improvements.

The sales tax on new cars would
go from three percent to five percent.
Registration fees would increase
by 15 dollars this year and then
another 5 dollars in 20-10.

major items in Kaine's 850
million-dollar transportation package.
The General Assembly will
consider the proposals during the
session that begins Wednesday.
The Democratic governor faces a
major obstacle in the

for slavery.

laid to rest in Bedford County.

87.
Hundreds of people turned out
yesterday for his funeral services in
Bedford.
Stevens and 33 other Bedford
natives took part in the D-Day invasion
in June of 1944.
