Wednesday Here's the concern...no one wants
a repeat of last week, when the Dan
River crested causing severe flooding
and damage in some areas.

The river has receded some since
then, but the National Weather Service
warns even one to two inches is all it
will take for another spill.

Emergency coordinators are
advising those who live in places prone
to flooding to go ahead and safeguard
valuables and be ready to evacuate.

left a number of families without a
home.

That after flames ripped through
the Park Inn Apartments on Melrose
Avenue around Noon yesterday.

The Red Cross and Immigration

services are working with those who
were displaced to find shelter.

The damage is estimated at about
200-thousand dollars.

The cause is under investigation.

received what looked like a legitimate
email that could have been used to
steal her identity.

It's an attempt by criminals to
trick victims into handing over credit
card and PIN numbers.

The scammers have been so
proficient in designing webpages that
look official that we've gotten to the
point where every email we receive has
to be scrutinized.

Kirsten Printz opened her work
email account on January Second and
found what appeared to be message from
Verizon which read there was a problem
processing her billing information for
December.

The email goes on to ask for her
to verify her information for Verizon's
new database files.

Clicking on the link provided

navigates to another webpage, that
again, looks official with boxes to
type in the sensative, personal
information.

Printz became suspcious and the
information was later passed on to
County police who varified through
Verizon that it was a scam.

This is not the first time she
received a phishing email.

The company logos and page
layouts look like the real deal.

The scammers actually set it up
to ask for comments.

If someone is not careful, they
could fill out the data request
thinking they are actually
communicating with the company.

Roanoke County Police advises
that reputable companies will never ask
customers to confirm credit card
numbers and other sensitive information
in an unsolicited email.

If you receive one, you should
delete it.

Also, contact the company
yourself by phone.

In many cases, these emails come
from another country and there are some
clues that give them away as scams.

survivors.

One of them died soon after.

The ferry went down December 29th,

about the safety of its Metro system.

of the train had to be rescued from the

tunnel.

The accident happened near the
underground Mount Vernon Square

(END SOT) Wednesday, Governor Tim Kaine says

he'll renew his call for transportation
improvements... and his plan to raise
some taxes and fees to pay for them.

One viewer hopes the idea doesn't pick
up speed.

"Sometimes you have to learn to live
within your means," Keith Francis
writes. "Perhaps Gov. Kaine and other
gov. officials would like to return
part of their salary to pay for their
projects."

Recent blizzards out west put the
National Guard into action, making a
viewer from Roanoke wonder why the
government didn't respond faster to
other disasters.

close eye on the Dan River.

week when the Dan River crested causing
severe flooding and damage in some
areas.

The river has receded some since
then but the National Weather Service
warns even one to two inches is all it
will take for another spill.

County are facing charges in
connnection with a shooting on Spanish
Oak Road.

Saturday Night Authorities say the argument
started Friday between two brothers,
but Saturday night it turned physical
with even more people jumping in.

Randy Stump, a foster father to

one of the brothers sustained the most
serious injury with a gunshot wound to

He's been arrested and charged
with malicious wounding of the first
victim.

Two other men, Douglas Howes and
Matthew Coggins were also taken into
custody on similar charges.

subway lines back up and running today
after a train derailment.

from an Indonesian ferry that sank more
than a week ago.

A rescue official says 15 people
were picked up by a cargo ship

late yesterday, after spending nine
days in a raft.

One of them died soon after.

The ferry went down December 29th,
after being pounded

by waves during a storm.

Since then, more than 200 survivors

recovered.

Scientists say they ve found a new and
plentiful source of stem cells.

Researchers at Wake Forest and Harvard
Universities say they have drawn stem
cells from amniotic fluid donated by
pregnant women.

They say those cells were successfully
turned into several different tissue
cell types, including brain, liver and
bone.

Scientists hope the new stem cells will
provide a less controversial

alternative to embryonic stem cells.

Foods, beverages and dietary
supplements containing both calcium and
vitamin D may soon carry labels saying
they help reduce the risk of
osteoporosis.

The Food and Drug Administration s
proposal came in response to a petition
from the makers of an orange juice,
fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

Democrats in the House of
Representatives have introduced
legislation that would require the
health secretary to negotiate lower
prices for prescription drugs covered
by the Medicare insurance program for
the elderly and disabled.

Democrats say Medicare patients will
get a better deal if the government can
bargain on their behalf.. opponents
question whether the government would
actually secure better prices.

A House floor vote is expected on
Friday.

River crested causing severe flooding
and damage in some areas.

The river has receded some since
then but the National Weather Service
warns even one to two inches is all it
will take for another spill.

valuables and be ready to evacuate.

are finding new ways to update old
schemes.

A Roanoke County resident
received what looked like a legitimate
email that could have been used to
steal her identity.

"phishing."

It's an attempt by criminals to
trick victims into handing over credit
card and PIN numbers.

The scammers have been so
proficient in designing webpages that

look official that we've gotten to the
point where every email we receive has
to be scrutinized.

Kirsten Printz opened her work
email account on January Second and
found what appeared to be message from
Verizon which read there was a problem
processing her billing information for
December.

The email goes on to ask for her
to verify her information for Verizon's
new database files.

Clicking on the link provided
navigates to another webpage, that
again, looks official with boxes to
type in the sensative, personal
information.

Printz became suspcious and the
information was later passed on to
County police who varified through
Verizon that it was a scam.

This is not the first time she
received a phishing email.

It's easy to see how someone
could fall prey.

The company logos and page
layouts look like the real deal.

The scammers actually set it up
to ask for comments.

If someone is not careful, they
could fill out the data request
thinking they are actually
communicating with the company.

Roanoke County Police advises
that reputable companies will never ask
customers to confirm credit card
numbers and other sensitive information
in an unsolicited email.

If you receive one, you should
delete it.

Also, contact the company
yourself by phone.

In many cases, these emails come
from another country and there are some
clues that give them away as scams.

The most notable is the phrasing
the scammers use.

ferry sank, officials are still finding
survivors.

A rescue official says 15 people
were picked up by a cargo ship

late yesterday, after spending nine
days in a raft.

One of them died soon after.

The ferry went down December 29th,
after being pounded

by waves during a storm.

So far, only ten bodies have been
recovered.

Washington, D- C is raising questions
about the safety of its Metro system.

Apartments on Melrose Avenue in Roanoke
has left a number of families homeless.

The Red Cross and Immigration
services are working with those who
were displaced to find shelter.

The cause is under investigation.
