winter appearance of the year caused
major problems for motorists today.

River Valley around 10:00 forcing
several school systems to close early.
*CG locator Smyth Co. The winter weather is even being :07 blamed for 24 accidents in a 3-hour
period in Smyth County.

Most of the pileups happened on
Interstate 81 just north of Chilhowie.

At least 5 tractor trailers and
five cars were involved in crashes that
shutdown all four lanes for hours.

At one point traffic was backed
up for more than 8 miles on each side.

January in Clifton Forge. Firefighters
believe it caught fire when someone was
refilling a kerosene heater.

The home was a total loss but luckily
everyone got out safely.

Scenes like this are all too common.

Last year in Virginia, 15-percent of
home fires were related to heating
sources.

Firefighters tell us in most cases
it's not the product but the person
using it that causes the fires.

Roanoke neighborhood awoke to. Plans

Windsor Avenue woke up to find their
tires had been slashed.

One van had been keyed and the
rest had to change tires to get where
they needed to go.

FIRST time something like this has
happened, meanwhile police continue to

from Lynchburg to a home along the
James River near Big Island.

clinging to life on Christmas Day,
air-lifted to Roanoke with a severe
head wound.

The baby didn't make it and now the
child's father stands charged with
first-degree murder and felony child
abuse.

Twenty-four year old Justin
Christopher Strode was arrested last
night, after he'd voluntarily gone in
to talk with sheriff's investigators.

decided not to pull the plug and
eliminate 20 city jobs.

erase some of the city's deficit which

Instead the council has decided
to curtail city spending...cutting back

obesity is a growing concern for
parents and educators.

But should the school system be
the ones to determine if your child is
overweight?

VO-NAT this Massachusetts mother says


NO....she received a letter from her
daughter's school saying she was
overweight and at risk for diabetes.

The 8 year old's mother says the

concern shown for her daughter was a
bit out of line.

She went on to say that two weeks
before Christmas her daughter had a
physical with their family doctor and
there was no problem with her daughters
weight.

The school system believes if
there is a concern they need to share
it with the parents so they can make a
decision on what to do next.

They also say children who are
healthier have a better attendance
record and a higher attention span.

The bill is called Abraham's Law
for Abraham Cherrix (Chair- ix) who was
diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease last
year.

When he and his parents
discovered a treatment plan they liked
in Mexico a legal battle ensued with a
judge threatening to force the teen to
undergo chemotherapy instead.

A Virginia Beach delegate wants
parents to be allowed to make
alternative choices without facing
neglect charges.

However, parents would have to
meet certain conditions - like making
the decision with their child.

Meanwhile, Cherrix says his
cancer is in remission and he's feeling
great.

Soon after the gavel falls in
Richmond lawmakers will hop on a bus
for Jamestown.

Their first stop will be
Jamestown Memorial Church.

That's where they'll hear from
Vice President Dick Cheney- who's in to

The church marks the spot where
the first representative government in
