GIVES HIM AN OPPORTUNITY ALSO TO SEE
HOW WE OPERATE THE BUS AND TRANSPORT
THE CHILDREN.

OQ=and transport the children. This was Carson's first afternoon

run, but he's been riding routes all
over the city... nine or ten at last
count...

SOT FULL 15:22 SOT FULL

INQ=What I see here DAVID CARSON/ROANOKE SCHOOL BOARD

CHAIRMAN: WHAT I SEE, HEAR, APPRECIATE
IS THE INCREDIBLE DEDICATION OF THESE
BUS DRIVERS. YOU'VE GOT FOLKS WHO HAVE
BEEN DRIVING BUSES FOR FIFTEEN, TWENTY,
THIRTY YEARS, WHICH IS UNBELIEVEABLE.

RUN=13 (END SOT)

OQ=which is unbelievable. With more than 140 school buses

transporting between ten and eleven
thousand students a day, Carson says
it's a crucial operation members of the
school board must appreciate.

And as the board considers
adjusting school start and stop times,
Carson says a couple of things stand
out... the number of students who are
picked up and dropped off close to
schools, and the number who catch the
bus at their front door instead of a
bus stop down the street.

SOT FULL 25:49 SOT FULL

INQ=Again I think that's a lovely nice AGAIN I THINK THAT'S A LOVELY NICE

thing THING TO DO, BUT IF YOU'RE TRYING TO
MAKE YOURSELF MORE EFFICIENT TO LOOK
FOR EXTRA TIME TO COLLAPSE THE START
AND STOP TIMES THAT WE HAVE, THAT MAY
BE A WAY TO DO THAT. THAT'S SOMETHING
THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO STUDY AND
THE COMMUNITY IS GOING TO HAVE TO HEAR
AND WEIGH ON, BUT FROM MY NON EXPERT

PERSPECTIVE THOSE ARE SOME THINGS TO
LOOK AT.

RUN = 20 (END SOT)

OQ=those are some things to look at. As they consider those questions,

Carson says he and other school board
members will continue to ride the bus.
