(SOT: BUSH)

"The situation in Iraq is unacceptable
to the American people. It is
unacceptable to me."

WITH DWINDLING SUPPORT FOR THE WAR AND
HIS OWN LEGACY ON THE LINE,

PRESIDENT BUSH DELIVERED PERHAPS HIS
MOST IMPORTANT SPEECH YET -- OUTLINING
HIS NEW STRATEGY FOR IRAQ.

THE PRESIDENT PLANS TO SEND MORE THAN
21-THOUSAND U.S. TROOPS TO IRAQ.

A MAJORITY OF THEM WILL BE ARMY
SOLDIERS DEPLOYED IN BAGHDAD, AND AN
EXTRA FOUR-THOUSAND MARINES WILL BE
SENT TO ANBAR PROVINCE -- A HOTBED FOR
SUNNI INSURGENTS AND AL-QAIDA FIGHTERS.

HE SAID THE ADDITIONAL TROOPS ARE
NEEDED TO AVOID MISTAKES OF THE PAST.

(SOT: BUSH)

"Our past efforts to secure Baghdad
failed for two principal reasons. There
were not enough Iraqi and American
troops to secure neighborhoods that had
been cleared of terrorists and
insurgents. And there were too many
restrictions on the troops we did
have."

BUT PRESIDENT BUSH INSISTS ...IRAQIS
MUST TAKE THE LEAD IN STOPPING THE
VIOLENCE.

THEY'VE AGREED TO COMMIT MORE FORCES.

(SOT: BUSH)

"These Iraqi forces will operate from
local police stations conducting
patrols and setting up checkpoints, and
going door-to-door to gain the trust of
Baghdad residents"

(STANDUP BRIDGE: KAREN BROWN/THE WHITE
HOUSE)

IN HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT BUSH SAID HE'S
MADE IT CLEAR TO IRAQ'S PRIME MINISTER
NOURI AL-MALIKI ... THAT AMERICA'S
COMMITMENT TO IRAQ IS NOT OPEN-ENDED.

(SOT: BUSH)

"If the Iraqi government does not
follow through on its promises, it will
lose the support of the American
people..."

THE PRESIDENT WILL ASK CONGRESS FOR
ANOTHER SEVEN-BILLION DOLLARS ... TO
PAY FOR THE TROOPS AND A NEW
RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM.

TOP DEMOCRATS SAY THE PRESIDENT IS
STILL MISGUIDED.

(SOT: SEN. DICK DURBIN/(D) ILLINOIS)

"20-thousand American soldiers are too
few to end this civil war in Iraq, and
too many American lives to risk on top
of those we already lost."

DEMOCRATS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE PLAN
TO HOLD SYMBOLIC VOTES -- FORCING
REPUBLICANS TO TAKE A STAND ON THE
PRESIDENT'S PROPOSALS .... FOR A WAR
THAT HAS ALREADY COST 400-BILLION
DOLLARS AND THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN
LIVES.

:00 Virginia came in hurting after
that last second loss to Stanford, but
you would never have known it by the
way they played. Roanoke's J.R.
Reynolds and Sean Singletary dominated
the backcourt matchup as Virginia led
most of the first half and kept it
tight after intermission, as well.

But it's a 40 minute game and in
the end Carolina's deep bench would
prove to be the difference.

UVA plays tough - but Carolina
eventually wears the Cavs down and
takes the 79 to 69 win. *CG final Virginia

High Point vs. VMI In Lexington tonight - the VMI
Keydets hosted High Point in a little
Big South action. VMI was hoping to
get its first conference win of the
season.

As always when VMI plays - the
pace was frantic. Reggie Williams will
miss the jumper, but do a nice job of
following his shot and he gets the
putback and finished with a game high

40 points and 15 boards.

Then watch the penetration and
nice kick back as Travis Holmes feeds
twin brother Chavis Holmes - who will

share of hoops as Arizona Reid a *CG final High Point scored 32 and led the Panthers to 63 115 first half points. High Points beats VMI VMI
