Besides these bells, Lexington is
actually pretty quiet this time of
year.

But come Saturday the streets will be
filled with hundreds of people.

FRED BLOOM/REENACTOR: IT WILL BE LIKE
STEPPING BACK IN TIME. REALLY
LEXINGTON IS LIKE STEPPING BACK IN
TIME.

This time around it will be a very

special occasion, Robert E Lee's 200th
birthday.

PAT GIBSON/ROCKBRIDGE CO. RESIDENT:
HE'S A BRILLIANT AMERICAN AND TO BE
ABLE TO CELEBRATE 200 YEARS IT JUST
SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE, IT'S BEEN THAT LONG.

Lee was born on January 19th 1807 and
while he's well known as a civil war
general, in later years he spent his
time at Washington and Lee University.

It is here in Lee Chapel where his
body is buried and a lot of his things
are on display.

That's why the university plans to
mark Lee's birthday in a very big way.

TIM KOLLY/WASHINGTON & LEE UNIVERSITY:
MOST OF OUR ACTIVITIES DURING THE 200TH
YEAR WILL REVOLVE AROUND LEE THE
EDUCATOR.

They include exhibits, lecturers, and
a play.

But the biggest celebration will come
this Saturday.

At eleven in the morning, the Sons of
Confederate Veterans will host a parade
through downtown Lexington.

FRED BLOOM: IT'S VERY IMPRESSIVE. WE
HAVE HUNDREDS OF REENACTORS.

At noon, the festivities move to Lee

Chapel for a service honoring his 200th
birthday.

The day will end with a Robert E. Lee
ball at the Hampton Inn.

It's a ticketed event and will be
complete with period attire and civil
war music.

PAT GIBSON: IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS
WE CAN'T GO BACK AND TASTE OR TOUCH OR
SMELL THE 19TH CENTURY, BUT WE CAN HEAR
IT.>>

allow localities to install cameras at

Motorists who run a red light

would not damage their driving record.

Similar bills have met a swift

The state currently pays about
70- percent of the tax- which is a big
source of revenue for localities.

Since the state has a budget
surplus, Cole says he believes the
legislature could look at making up the
money localities would lose.

The amendment has to pass the
legislature two years in a row before
being placed before voters in a
referendum.

Cole proposed a similar measure
two years ago.

It passed in the House, but was
