Negotiations between the company
and the union have been going on for
quite some time and it always seems to
boil down to healthcare and pension
concerns.

Yesterday's vote was on
Meadwestvaco's second contract offer.

Leaders for the steel workers'
Union in Covington were confident the
majority of its members would reject
the deal and they proved correct.

They say they will continue
pushing for another healthcare and
pension plan.

The plant employs many Covington
residents who are now uneasy about
their future.

GRAPHIC=SUNDAY HUNTING A new statewide poll shows most

Virginians oppose changing state law to
allow hunting on Sundays, an issue
which could come up in this year's
General Assembly.

ENG#=1 VO-NAT

VO-NAT Our News-7-Survey USA Poll asked

500 state RESIDENTS, not necessarily
hunters Tuesday for their opinion. 34
percent favor Sunday hunting, but 61
percent oppose it.

We conducted a similar poll in
our viewing area in November and found
REGIONAL opposition is even stronger -
66 percent.

But a Department of Game and
Inland Fisheries' random survey of
LICENSED HUNTERS showed a different
result...a little more than half
FAVORED Sunday hunting, compare that to
our statewide poll or residents that
found 53 per cent of hunters OPPOSE it.

(END SOT) President Bush heads to Fort Benning,

Georgia today.. to launch the P-R

blitz for his new Iraq strategy.

BUSH 21:19:04 If we increase our
support at this crucial moment, and

help the Iraqis break the current cycle
of violence, we can hasten the

day our troops begin coming home.

(GFX)

The President intends to send in nearly
22 thousand U-S troops.. and ask

Congress for nearly seven billion more
dollars to pay for the surge and

a new reconstruction program.

BUSH 21:07:19 Our troops will have a
well-defined mission: to help

Iraqis clear and secure neighborhoods,
to help them protect the local

population, and to help ensure that the
Iraqi forces left behind are

capable of providing the security that
Baghdad needs.

Democrats largely oppose the force
build-up.

(Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL))

DURBIN 21:25:38 Escalation of this war
is not the change the American

people called for in the last election.

House and Senate leaders are planning
symbolic votes on the troop

increase that may garner some
Republican support.

In his speech President Bush said hes
told Iraqi leaders Americas

commitment is not open-ended.. and he
challenged critics calling for

troop withdrawals.

BUSH 21:18:45 to step back now would
force a collapse of the Iraqi

government, tear that country apart,
and result in mass killings on an

unimaginable scale.

But the president DID warn even if his
strategy works.. violence and US

causalities in Iraq will continue.

CLOSE: The Secretaries of State and

Defense are pushing the plan in a

news conference this morning.. and in
hearings later on Capitol Hill.

Online dating scams are in at
number 9. Scambusters anticipate these
scams will grow even more in 2007.

At number 8 is a new category of
scams. Just like phishing emerged as a
new and very important category of
scams a few years ago, they predict
that a similar new category of scams
will emerge.

Job postings and overpayment
scams are listed at number 7.

They scam works by asking
receipients to cash checks from out of

the country and send back a portion of
the funds, keeping the rest as a
payment.

We found several cases of that in

The author of the email is
allegedly having a hard time moving
12-million dollars from an African bank
account into the U-S.

As always, if you receive one of
these messages, hit the "delete"

Viruses, worms, and trojans are listed
as the number 4 scam threat of 2007.

Number 3 is lottery scams. The
experts say to stay ahead. Despite
what the official looking paper says,
you haven't won anything.

Phishing scams are on the list at
number 2. We've received several
reports about phishing this week. One
example is an email sent to a Verizon
customer asking them to update their
personal information for the company's
new database.

Roanoke resident Kirsten Printz

could very easily drag out into 2008,
